I had a hard drive failure. Replaced under warranty. All is well not except that when I click the IE to go to the browser, MS Windows Update window appears every time. Got all updates and none left there. I can click on Home and get the Home Page I set.

Went to Internet Explorer in my programs, used the Icon there and the same things occurs.

I'd like to change this to where the IE Icon leads to my Home Page. I don't know how to do this.

    Hi Mudd,

IE Tools > Internet options > general tab is where the home page is set.

If you can't change it to what you want, one of your security apps might be preventing it. For example, SpyBot has an option to prevent the user from doing so.

I probably wasn't clear with my post. When I check the Home Page on IE my selection is correct. But, when I click the IE Icon on my Desktop the Windows Update Page comes on rather than the Home Page I set.

It's like the IE Shortcut on the Desktop and Programs are a "Shortcut to Windows Update. "

Once the browser opens to Windows Update I can click Home and get the page that I set.

Hope I'm more clear this time.

    Mudd--
Right click on the IE shortcut icon|Properties. What is entered in either the Target or Home Page lines (it depends on how you set up the shortcut)?
As a work around you could create a new shortcut using iexplore.exe which has the Target line "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe " (with quotes). The Start In line should probably read %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Thanks Pete. Downloaded the Reg File, ran it, rebooted and still have the same problem.

Welshjim. The desktop Shortcut takes me to the Internet Tools-Options, just as if you clicked Tools and Internet Options on IE.

The IE Icon in Programs takes me to Program Files/InternetExplorer. The Blue IE Icon there takes me to my troubles, back to Windows Update.

The Start line reads exactly like your post: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEOPATH%

As a beginner this is about as confusing as anything yet!

Also, I have SpyBot with Tea Timer activated. Each time the Win Update Page comes up, the Tea Timer pops a window indicating that Browser Page is not allowed but it runs anyway. I repeat for your information: The Home page is set to a perferred page. The IE loaded page with HOME icon takes me to the proper Home Page. It's just the Program file and the shorcut that visits the wrong one.

    Hi Mudd,

What browser page isn't it allowing to run? You seem to think its the MU page that its trying to block, does it say that specifically?

Did you try shutting down SpyBot's resident processes for the time being - Spybot is interferring in some way.

    Regards - Charles

charlesvar Believes it's the Update page because it appears as soon as I click the icon.

Thanks for the idea about shutting down the Tea Timer. Will try that and post.

Charlesvar - Sure angers me when someone with the know-how corrects my mistakes because I want to be that knowledgeable but never will!:)

Spy Bot Resident was the culprit. Things are working just fine now. Thank you very much. I really appreciate the time and efforts of you and your counterparts.:D

charlesvar--I didn't want to come back with this but I cannot figure out why I can't change my home page with unchecking the options in Tea Timer, Spy Bot.

I have the Host file locked with the IE Tweaks. Each and every time I enable Tea Timer the Opening Page is Windows Update.

Without uninstalling and reinstalling Spy Bot (would that work?}, what can I do? I like the Tea Timer letting me know about Browser attempts.

    Hi Mudd,

    Ah, the other shoe.

I'm assuming that the other "locks" - change home page by the user and getting into IE's panel are un ticked - untick the one for the Hosts file as well and see what that does.

Don't know what if anything teatimer does with the HOSTS - it may put entries into it. One way the HOSTS may be used is to block web sites.

Go into the HOSTS file: Windows > System32 > drivers > etc and see what entries are there, it opens with Notepad.

A standard HOSTS will have only the loopback entry that looks like this:
    127.0.0.1 localhost

If this doesn't turn out to be the problem, then yes, I would uninstall/re install - something may have been corrupted.

    Regards - Charles

The Host File appears as you mentioned so it must be OK.

Sleep time for this old man. Will get after this first thing tomorrow. Thanks again and will post if the reinstall works.

Try setting it to about:blank, delete your TIFs, and History, then close and reopen the browser and see if it sticks. If so, then change it back to the page you want.

Zander, thank you for the information. I got up early this morning with this on my mind and decided to follow Charlesvar's advice and reinstall. That solved the problem. Tea Timer is now on and the Home Page comes up with clicking IE.

    Thanks to all.
