Okay, here's the deal. I have an NEC A1000 All In One. All was working great on the computer, until I decided to reformat it. I have done this on other computers, and they still work. All I wanted to do was remove MY personal name & info on it, so I could give it to a freind.

With this one, this is what I did:
    From DOS:
    c:\format c:
verified all will be lost? yes
    c: typed exit
    the screen went blank.

I then attempted to put in the restore CD that came with the unit and it won't even recognized it. The screen stays blank. What do I do? HELP PLEASE!

Did you boot off a floppy disk first? You can't format C from C, it has to be done off a bootable floppy. You can get a boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com .

    Formatting NEC Computer

I guess I can degrade myself to a beginner again.
Yes I did format from C:

I made the bootdisk as you suggested, put the disk in the drive, however, it will not turn on. It has a stream of lights (on the monitor) at the beginning of a normal startup; they did do their lighting up, the keyboard lights for a second and then back off, but nothing came up on the screen. I don't hear the hard drive gearing up like usual. Any suggestions?

When you made the bootdisk; how did you do it? If you just copied the file to a floppy it won't work. To make the bootdisk you need to first put a floppy disk in the drive and then double click on the file you downloaded.

Also, make sure the computer is set to boot from the floppy first in the bios setup. Then, if you get it to boot from the floppy, at the a: prompt type format c: .

    Boot Disk

Steve gave me a link to bootdisk.com, I clicked on the link downloaded the link to Windows 98SE OEM. Saved it on my hard drive and opened the file and it ask for a floopy to copy it on to.

I'm working on a different computer (to contact you) than the NEC that has the problem. The NEC screen is completely blank. I cannot see or do anything on it. I cannot set it to boot from the floopy that I made from the download. As I stated before in the last post I don't even hear the hard drive turning like it is not reading anything.

    This is what I did:
    From DOS:
    c:\format c:
verified all will be lost? yes
    c: typed exit
    the screen went blank.

That is when I asked for help from you guys.

    formatting NEC all in one

Correct, the screen is totally blank, no cursor, no hard drive gearing up, all I hear is the fan running. Keyboard lights for a split second and goes out. mouse does nothing. I put in the recovery cd, nothing. I put in the Startup disk, nothing. I even went to a Best Buy and asked the Geek Squad if I did everything right. Two people said yes.

Would it help if I tried to boot it up with an external cd drive? I have one, but haven't tried it yet. Or is there a way to press one of the "F1-... buttons to start a new set up or something?

It almost sounds more like the power supply is 90% dead.

There's only one thing that can be done for a bad power supply->Replace it.

Then again, it's just a guess on my part. If you don't have any spare parts laying around, it might be a good idea to let the geek squad take a look at it.

Nope, I don't want to pay $59 for them to even check it out. It's not even worth the money for that. I was just gonna give it to some friends for their kids to play games on.

If I donate it to a computer repair shop, will they be able to pull out any of my personal information on it, should they decide to repair it?

    Here, This may help:...

Try this... I have been through the formatting process MANY times,...

    1. Make sure ALL cables are connected properly.

    2. Press power button on computer

    3. Immediately press [F1] key repeatedly..... If this doesn't work to enter BIOS , try the same thing with each of the F# Keys in turn.

    4. When BIOS is then up on the screen, Set the boot order to have your BootDisk Drive:

    A: for floppy
    D: for CD, etc....
    ..........................

    5. Then try to format/reinstall

Please let me know whether or not this helps at all!!!!!!
