Every time I insert a data disc (something that doesn't autostart) into one of my drives, internal or external, I get this error:

    Windows - Drive Not Ready

The drive is not ready for use; it's door may be open. Please check the drive and make sure that a disc is inserted and that the drive door is closed.

    Cancel Try Again Continue

I click on continue, and all is well. Never have a problem reading the disc. This happens whether I'm using a CD or DVD disc.

What's with this useless error message & how can I stop it from popping up?

    Thanks

After placing a cd in, are you giving it a "few" seconds to let windows detect it.

how many optical drives and how are they connected?

basically, i'd say check the drive maker's site for firmware updates. most have them and they usually address odd issues and incompatibilities. i'd get em.

I think I would look for and install the latest motherboard/chipset drivers. Upgrading the IDE Controller drivers should reset the CD/DVD drivers and how the system uses "removable" drives (also check for separate USB Controller driver updates).

Use Everest in my signature if you need help ID'ing the hardware.
