I had a local computer shop install a new Dell cd-r/w player in this computer. I wanted the old cd rom player left in the computer also. Now I can't get the old cd player to work. It has power to it, (you can put a cd in it and you can hear it try to run, but nothing happens). Also on boot up it ( the old cd-rom player) shows up first, then the new one. The new one works great but would like to be able to use the old one too! Is this thing fried? A new one is not that expensive, it's just that it WAS working when I took it to the shop. Hate to take it back to this guy because I think I know about as much as he does:) Any help appreciated, maybe there is no help:D

The first thing to check is how the drives are jumpered....

The drive at the end of the ribbon cable should be set as Master and the second drive connected part way down the ribbon cable should be set as Slave.

You will find the jumpers on the rear of each drive - small connecting blocks about 1/4 in long x 1/16 in wide. Master and Slave positions are generally clearly marked. Maybe best if you look at the manual for the new drive to get the picture :)

Thanks for the response. I can put a cd in the drive and Windows Media Player will recognize the cd but it will not run the cd. I can hear the drive making noise as though it's trying to run, as I say nothing. I'm thinking another cd drive is in the works! Thanks again! I will check to see how they are jumpered. That is probably why the old cd drive is showing up first at boot up, you think?

If it is set as Master - yes.

I suggest you check the ribbon cable connection to this drive - possibly it was not seated properly by your tech.

Hello, I just checked the jumpers and the cabling on the cd-rom and the cd-r/w drives and they were installed with the old cd drive at the end of the cable and set as slave. The new one was part way down the cable and set as master, go figure . At any rate I changed the drives where the new one is at the end of the cable and set as master, the old one part way down and set as slave. Annnnnnnnnd, it still wont work! The new one works great as always. So, it's off to acquire a new cd-rom! Thanks for everything and I do reccommend this site to anyone of my friends that is having computer questions! As a side, will a cd-rom from an Apple computer (I got an old Apple just gatherin' dust) work in this one? Best regards to all, Frank

That is the correct way to do it. BTW, CDRW drives work better in the Master position, some manufacturers recommend this.

I just purchased a new cd r/w dvd burner. I'm still unclear what to set these drives at. The old cd r/w is now set at master at the end of the cable. Should I set the new r/w dvd as master in the middle of the cable and change the cd r/w as slave at the end of the cable? Sorry to sound so stupid but the fact is; I am  Also gonna install more ram while I am inside the box. Thanks for any help!

If you have a 40 wire IDE ribbon, the Master goes in the middle, the Slave on the end.
If you have a 80 wire IDE ribbon, the Master goes in the end, the Slave in the middle.
Don't count the connections to determine this, they both have 39 connections.
My link in the previous post has photos on this.
