Hi,

I followed some instructions that I found here for making Google my default search engine. However, when I click on a bookmark, I frquently get the message "We can't find the site xxxxxxxxxx" (x=the site in question) even though I know that the site is there. Instead of the name of the site appearing in the address bar of IE I get "http://sea.search.msn.com ". Is there any way of getting rid of this totally? It is frequently wrong in that it says it can't find the site I want to log on to even though it is there and works the second time that I try. I don't want MSN interfering like this, especially when it get it wrong so frequently.

Also the instructions for making Google the default search engine don't say what to do with the registry key "HK_Local_machine\software\microsoft\Internet Explorer\search" which has "Customise Search Reg_SZ http://ie.search.msn.com {sub_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust/htm" in the right hand pane
Cany anyonehelp, please?

ChrisCS - Welcome to the Board :)

I can't vouch for this, but take a look at Making Google Your Default Internet Explorer Search Engine and note the update at the bottom of the page re. disabling Search Assistant in XP/IE 6

As you will be delving into the Registry and making changes, back it up first :)

ChrisCS--I seem to remember (it was long ago) that when I clicked on Search on the Toolbar and then Customize, I was indeed not offered Google. But there was a little box or button at the left bottom. I cannot remember what it said--perhaps Advanced. When I checked/clicked that, I got a new window which allowed me to choose the Search engine I wanted, including Google.
So I chose Google, and now that is what opens in the left panel when I click Search.
Perhaps also interesting is that the Registry entry which you mention ( "HK_Local_machine\software\microsoft\Internet Explorer\search" which has "Customise Search Reg_SZ http://ie.search.msn.com {sub_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust/htm" ") is exactly what I still show in my Registry. So maybe the Registry change is not needed??

Diolch for the suggestions, WelshJim. The link that I found that makes Google the default search engine involved editing the registry which is why I wondered if the registry needs editing again in order to get rid of MSN search.

Regards,
Chris

Thanks as well PeteC. I followed the link and found that it gives the same instructions as the Infinisource web page including the update. What is frustrating is that I have the "Use search assistant" set to "No" but get it nevertheless. I am beginning to wonder if I am looking for the wrong thing as I only get this MSN search thing when I type in (or click on) a web site address and it says it can't find the site. It says something about DNSerror but it disappears too quickly for me to read. Equally frustrating is the fact that MSN Search says that it can't find the site even though it is there and i have typed the address correctly
