Hello. For quite a while, I've had a problem where in Outlook Express 6 I can't receive e-mail. What happens is that when I press the send/receive button, it connects to my POP3 server and starts to receive message # of #, but when it goes to receive the messages it freezes up and then says "Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The error signature looked like this:
    AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 10.0.6626.0 ModName: kernel32.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001861d

Here are the properties of my computer system:

Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, OEM Installed - came with no cd when PC was purchased)
    Intel Celeron CPU 1.80GHz
    512 MB of RAM

I have installed all the latest Office XP/Windows XP updates via Microsoft Update, ran Microsoft Windows Defender, AVG Anti-Virus, PC OnPoint and PC PitStop Optimize (thinking it was a registry problem), Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE and nothing has come up.

I tried archiving my email messages to maybe preserve space and even defragmented my hard drive but nothing's changed. I did, however, save all my emails from webmail in an online saved folder. Then, one by one, I started sending myself text only messages to receive in Outlook and then they came in fine. I thought I would've had problems with HTML based or attachment e-mails but still, ok there as long as I only received one email per checked session. Now here comes the confusing part. When I'd get a lot e-mails at once (like 22 messages for example), Outlook would freeze up like it first did all over again. I tried to send an e-mail though and it would take forever for it to find the host but yet it would easily find it for receiving email. And the thing is, it uses the same server info: mail.domainname.com on both incoming and outgoing. I got this message when I tried sending an email, "The connection to the server has failed. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E ".

I am so lost (and I consider myself pretty computer savvy). Can somebody help me out? I would greatly aprpeciate it.

Open Internet Options in Control Panel. Under the Programs tab make sure Outlook Express shows in the E-mail: window then click Apply - OK. Open Outlook Express then click Tools > Accounts. Under the Mail tab highlight each account and click the Properties button. Under the Servers tab uncheck the box Log on using Secure Password Authentication and My server requires authentication. Under the Advanced tab uncheck the two boxes This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Move the slider for Server Timeouts to Long then click Apply -OK. Do this for each account. Now test OE to see if it functions correctly.

    No luck yet ...

Thanks for your help but unfortunately, none of what was suggested worked. I don't have a windows XP SP2 CD so I can't reinstall XP (I didn't have to install Service Pack 2 either because it was the original version of windows that came with the computer when I bought it). Any other suggestions?

hyperrush--You mention Outlook Express in your first sentence and title of this thread, but the error seems to involve Outlook (outlook.exe).
    For Outlook
"Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close ( MS Messenger has this problem too)
Outlook Error Message code is as follows
    AppName: outlook.exe
    AppVer: 10.0.6626.0
    ModName: kernel32.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.1106
    Click on Start
    Click on Run
    Type in
    regsvr32 skchui.dll
    Click Okay
You should get a window saying the file was registered okay.
ALSO I have been told that updating to the latest version of Direct X has worked for some. "
    The above came from

Might be on to something ...

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I accidentally put the error message I got in Outlook 2002 but the same thing happens in Outlook Express 6 as well (in which I read somewhere that Oulook 2002 relies on components from OE6). Here's the error message from OE6:

    Error Signature:
    AppName: msimn.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: kernel32.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001861d

Nonetheless, I tried the regsvr32 command as you suggested and this is what I got:

LoadLibrary( "skchui.dll ") failed - The specified module could not be found.

I would assume I would need to replace that file? How would I do that? Any advice further from here would be greatly appreciated.

hyperrush--I see you have already posted on this issue in another thread.
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=52108
I guess you did not get any help.
I have not experienced this problem, so you can see I am just thrashing about looking for ideas. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Some how I feel the real problem is with that message about the 800CCC0E error. Here is what Google has to offer on that.
    http://www.google.com/search?source...=GGLD,GGLD:2004-31,GGLD:en&q=error+0x800CCC0E
Have you tried to reinstall your Outlook and OE accounts? Or run an IE repair? Or Start|Run|tyoe sfc /scannow|OK? The last looks for and corrects corrupt Windows System files. You will probably need your Win CD to run the Windows Protection Tool.
    Or telephoned your email service/ISP?

There are further references from www.google.com on the other error messages about kernel32.dll. I am not sure any sucessful fixes were reported
    http://www.google.com/search?source...e+AppVer:+6.0.2900.2180+ModName:+kernel32.dll

(note the suggestion of problems with the video card)

You could try running the Repair option from the Office CD.

I cannot tell you if you need skchui.dll. It is a file specific to a somewhat obscure function in MS Office.
    http://www.file.net/process/skchui.dll.html
Unless you run that program, I would not think it would be the problem.
