I just recently received a new computer with Windows XP installed on it. Before turning on the computer for registration I connected the cable between the computer running Windows 98(host) and the my new computer running XP (guest). I turned it on then and registered and was automatically connected to the internet. Now about a week later a friend tried to Network the computers together so that I could get files off of my new computer to take to college with me. Needless to say, my internet connection will not work on my new computer, but only on my old one. I did a whole system restore and all being that it was brand new and still nothing works. PLEASE help me! Thanks!

Need to know a few more thing.
1.What did your friend try to network the pc's with? Cat 5? direct connect, ect.....?
2.Between the first time you connected and after the reload did you have any hardware changes? diferent cables, pluged into different jacks, ect.......?
3.After the re-Install are you still trying to go through the 98pc for your connection?

You know what . . . I'm not real sure what kind it is. I read the wire and all it says is that it's a computer cable. I will try to find out ASAP and let you know but for now . . . I have no idea. Secondly there were no hardware changes. Last . . . I am still trying to connect through windows 98. I know that it's reccommended to use XP as the host, but my parents will not let me take it off of their computer and use mine as the host.

Are you sharing Internet because of one phone line or because of having only one paid service in your house hold? Are both pc's having to use the Connection at the same time? So you and your parents are surfing at the same time or are you guys just sharing a account?

We have two lines in our house and use one as our internet connection line. The only reason we are trying to share the internet connection is because of how many people there are in my family and want to use the internet at the same time. We only do this in the summer. We connected other computers before with this cable, but both were running 98. So yes we are trying to surf the web at the same time on both computers.

sixks - You mentioned that a friend "tried to Network the computers together so that I could get files off of my new computer to take to college with me. "

If you were successful in using ICS to connect your XP system to the internet via the 98 Host, I'm a little confused as to what more he thought you needed to do.

At this point, are your original two computers still hooked together? If so, is it via a wire between two network cards (plug looks like a phone connector but lots bigger)?

Can the two PCs see each other?

Please list all the network card settings.

Awk!!! No. Not a hub.

Get a router/switch device instead with enough ports to handle the max number of PCs you anticipate and a connector for high speed (DSL/Cable).
