Hope I can explain this correctly. Yesterday morning when turning the PC on I got a "Windows Security Warning" which I think was the Microsoft Defender. Said I had no Firewall, nor Anti-virus, and blah, blah. I do have these programs. However, when checking them, they were turned off for some reason. I enabled them canceling the Security message and then all type of problems began.

First, the Host had no Internet Connection. I'm running a Modem on a Broadband. Finally got that to going and the Client PC, by crossover cable, had no connection to the host at all.

At last I got the networking to share but for the life of me cannot get the ICS to work. I reconfigured my Firewall to allow the Client, I've redone the Host file in the appropriate folder in windows, and I've redone the networking with the Wizard and manually.

As an inexperience user I cannot find the problem. I've made sure the Internet Connection is shared. All are working well on the Host but the client has only file and printer sharing, no ICS.

I'm sure the Microsoft Security Thing from yesterday had something to do with this as the night before all was well. Since then all is not well. My Grouch is the Client who is down the hall and I've got to get this fixed!

Have you checked Event Viewer for clues? If there wasn't a crash and the HD chkdsk'd without a bunch of errors, I would try a system restore. Kind of hard when it is someone else's machine. They don't always know or tell you about a problem if they think it is not important. By the way I'm assuming this is XP.

Both machines are XP. I did check the Events and there were several areas mentioning DCOM which showed a Red X.

I went back 3 days on each machine Restore and that is when the connections began to look normal again but without ICS. I cannot Ping either machine from.

The icons are blinking showing connectivity. Everything is working except for the ICS. I've had this connection going for almost 4 years and never had a problem.

I've turned off File and Printer Sharing hoping this might be the reason but it wasn't.

We live in a Rural Area and fortunate that the Broadband Cable travels to our area to a little settlement down the road. That's why we are on Broadband. Grouch does some minor bookkeeping service and why it's so important to get this fixed.

The PC Techs really take advantage of doing service outside the nearest city for we rural folks. However I may have to swallow their price if I can't get this running.

Definitely not an expert but I have tried everything I know to find the problem. I ran a SFC hoping this might correct something. It did not. I feel sure there is a easy way to correct this if I can find it.

Thank you for reply. Please keep thinking about this.

I am with maggie on the Router.

    I have one with 3 machines ( 2 98SE and 1 XP ) and a Printer plugged into it.

No ICS invloved at all. Each machine has its own Network card and its own connection. No one machine depends on the other for anything.

If one machines takes a trip South the other two are still OK.

But with the Router you do not use Crossover cables. And you do need the proper Model Printer. But in the long run it pays off to spend the few extra bucks.

I understand that and money isn't an issue for the Router. What's so hard for me to swallow is that for years this setup worked properly. Last Monday morning is when this stuff started. Windows Security (what ever that is) has a pop up that indicated XP Firewall was turned on for security reasons. I have Win Patrol as well as SpyBot with the Tea Timer activated and when the Security Window came up all kinds of messages from SpyBot Tea Timer appeared as well As Win Patrol indicating a Registry change was taking place and/or a new start up program was allowed. The Network hasn't worked since.

Maggie gave me some links to visit and after reading them, making some changes, I now have good Ping results from both machines. I have the ICS enabled from the host machine but for some reason it will not connect to the internet from the Client. I've done a ipconfig /renew, flushed the ipconfig, rebooted, all to no avail.

Normally I'd give up on something like this but not this time!

I suggest thoroughly checking your system for malware. AV & Firewall switching off could be a sign of some malware action.

Thank You Arie. I have run two programs checking for Malware and Virus. Nothing appeared. I have also ran AdWare, SpyBot,and CWShredder.

I finally got the system to ping each other, until a few minutes ago. I did this by following some link from the Net about Network problems.

Found one about TCP/IP Stack. Ran that and all went well. Reading on a Network Forum and one person suggest maybe a WinSock was corrupt. Downloaded WinSock rEPAIR from Geeks URL, ran it and after rebooting I'm back to square one,no connection nor ping. Maybe I can get this back where it was.

Enlighten me please. If each machine can ping the other; the connection icons show connection; Firewall turned off; ICS connection turn on; what else could be stopping the connection.

I'm thinking I can do a Windows Repair on the Client machine. Do you believe that might help?

I cannot do a Repair on the Host. Don't have a Windows CD. Have a Windows DVDR but this Dell won't boot from a DVD, according to the Setup in BIOS.

I'm sure at a loss as to what to do now. The PC Techs in the nearest City ask for "retirement benefits" when they make a service call to the country which is where I live. May come to that.

The PC finally quit all together except when I choose "Last Good Configuration." I called the Manuf and they worked with me most of an afternoon without success. Ran all kind of diagnostic test. It's under warranty if the problem is hardware or their software. They could distinguish what the problem was A Tech is supposed to called me tomorrow and make arrangements to correct what ever needs to be corrected.

It's a Dell with a Dell/Symantec Restore which I think is a watered down GHOST. That will no longer work.

Wanted to thank all that offered help. Appreicate that.

That Dell/Symantec Restore will only take you back to when the system was shipped. Glad it was still under warrenty. My son had them come and work on his laptop. They ended up replacing almost everything. His laptop is like new.
