Scanner causes freezesups

Hi,
I have a H & P 5100c scanner parallel connected to puter Cyrix 666 /80mb on a Pentium (Txpro) board It has a 4 usb card fitted with a H & P 640c printer connected usb. Th scanner test says the scanner and printer really like each other and printers a test page ok, But when I try and scann the puter freezes up and I have to give it the 3 finger salute quick or I'll get a blue screen of death.
Previously I had a Canon bc 210 printer on parallel and had the same problem I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times even to going into the registry and scrubbing every trace of the scanner before reinstalling.
Any Ideas ??

 

Have you been to HP site and check if you have the latest software updates/patches?

When I first had this problem I spent about 40 min on the help deck to H & P and they could not figure it out but sent a new cd rom installation disc which gave exactly the same results.
This was approx well over a year ago now I have just about given up on it but my wife naggs me every now again about needing a a way to copy things (in colour). I've figured if H & P can n't figure it out who can.

 

Since this has been a yr long problem, I think I would start troubleshooting 101 all over. You may have tried this, but I would remove the printer and scanner both hardware/software. Try just installing the scanner and see if it still freezes. Which OS?
