Hi all. Another day, another problem. When I moved house in November, I had to cancel my broadband subscription with NTL. I then moved house and sometime later decided that i would get broadband again with the same company. I got it all installed and went to Outlook to configure the settings and the new E-mail address. I put everything in correctly (POP, SMTP etc) but I'm still receiving nothing. I really need to start getting the mail because I have bought something of eBay and the mail is getting sent to the old address and I need the links in the E-mails.

    Thanks in advance.

What happens when you try to get the mail? Any error message?

Are you wanting to get mail that is being sent to an older/closed email account?

Not trying to get old mail as the that account will have been closed now. If I try sending an E-mail to the Outlook account using my Hotmail account, I get a message from the Postmaster saying that it is not deliverable, and the Outlook constantly says 'No New Messages'.

Well, it sounds like your Outlook Express is working OK if you aren't getting any error message. Are you sure the address is correct that you're sending it to?

If you want, I'll send you an email from the BBS for a test. First make sure you have the correct email address registered here though. Click the UserCP link at the top left of this page and then on the left side click "edit email & password ".

I have my Hotmail account registered here, not Outlook. It worked fine before but when I moved house and got a new account, it didn't work. Do I have to do anything or can I just create a completely new one from scratch? Could it lie in the provider? When I opened up the account, I never opened up a Outlook account then.

You should be able to just edit the settings for the account you had before. Evidently you have them correct or you'd get an error message when trying to get your email.

A sent email that gets returned as undeliverable usually means you sent it to an address that doesn't exist. If you sent your new account an email and it got returned it has nothing to do with your settings in OE. There's a problem with how it's getting sent, not how it's being received. Or at least from what you've said, it would appear that way.

I have just tried again. If I go to Hotmail and send an E-mail from 'mrevans@-' (Hotmail) to 'mrdevans@-' (Outlook), Hotmail returns the message to me saying:

'This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

    mrdevans@- '

So I decided to send an E-mail from Outlook to Hotmail to see if it would work, and it does. I got the message in my Hotmail inbox imediately. But I just can't receive them in Outlook. Any ideas?

    1) Are you paying anything to the email service provider? If so, you should be able to get some tech support from them.
    2) Have you tried setting up "another" Outlook Express account using your old address? It might work.
    3) Have you looked in IE Tools|Internet Options|Programs tab to see if OE is your default email service?
    4) Have you looked in OE Tools|Accounts|highlight account in question|Properties|General tab to see if the box "Include this account..." at the bottom of the window is checked?
P.S. In your post, you switch back and forth as to whether you are using Outlook or OE. I have assumed OE in the above.
P.P.S.--You probably know all this, but here is how you set up a OE email account. Might help to review

Well, it seems to be a problem with Hotmail. I don't really know though. If you trust me enough you can send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you one from my account. It's up to you, but it would be interesting to know if it gets to you or not.

Do you have your address saved in your Hotmail address book? If so, maybe take a look at that and see what's there for an address. Maybe it's using the wrong one. I don't know what else to say. From everything you've said so far, it appears to be a problem on the sending side, not receiving.

One more thought. When you signed up with your ISP; are you sure you didn't make a typo when you chose an email address?

I don't think I'm paying anything to the provider. I just pay for the broadband and got something like five Outlook Express accounts with it.

I'll try setting up another one now. I'm not bothered about the old account because I can change the E-mail in my eBay settings and get the mail sent again.

    Yeah, it's the default.

    Yeah, that's checked.

Sorry for the confusion, it’s Outlook Express I'm referring to.

PM'd you the details. I don't have it saved in the address book, I just type it and send it. When I signed up with the ISP, they sent a disc, I couldn't install because I have a problem running certain .exe's, so I had to go to a 'Provisioning Page', or something similar. Then, I opened up Outlook Express, deleted the old account, and created a new one and I haven't had one E-mail since. Not even spam!

    Ok, I sent it.
You won't get any spam as long as you don't give the address out to anybody other than friends. If you use it on the internet you can expect it though. I've had the account I'm using now for 3 years and I think I've received something like 4 or 5 spam emails in all that time. I never give it out to any website with the exception of this one and Fred Langa's newsletter. The few I have received I'm sure are just randomly generated by some program. Lucky hits.

I never used my previous E-mail address (Outlook Express) for anything but eBay, and before that, it wasn't used at all but I still got around 10-15 spam E-mails a week. It was weird. Anyway, I've just checked and I haven't received your mail. I think I should just ring up NTL and have a chat with them if everyone is out of ideas?

    Zander--
If only that were the case.
I have three email accounts with Comcast. I have never used or disclosed one of these accounts to anyone. And yet I get 5-10 spams a day on it. As you have said, I think the spam is sent by computer generation which just sends to millions of potential addresses. The only other explanation is that Comcast disclosed it.

    enrique86--
You are paying for the email, too. You might try getting some help from the ISP. Also, if the ISP offers a webmail site, which you are accessing through OE, you can go to the webmail site to see if anything is on the server which is not being downloaded to OE.

Well, I haven't got it back yet but it sometimes takes a while for that. I think you'd be best off to call your ISP. You are paying for it whether you realize it or not. They should have some type of support for this. If you don't get it resolved with them, we can give it another try.

One thing you might try first is sending an email from your new account in OE to your Hotmail address. If it gets there, then try replying to it and see if you receive that one in OE. It would be one more bit of info for you.

Jim, that's quite a few spam emails for never having given it out. As I said, I've received only a few over three years time. Before I changed ISP's I got all kinds of spam but I did use the address on the internet.

A couple thoughts come to mind as to how they could get your email address (aside from computer generated addresses) . Have you ever received an e-card from anybody. You know, the kind where you click a link in the email to view the card. Well, if you have, whoever sent it to you had to give your address to that site in order for them to send you the link to the e-card. That alone would do it if the site sells the addresses it gets. Or, the webpages that you view that have a link on them that say something like "send this page to a friend" . If they have to give the site your address to do it, well.......

Also, if you ever replied to a spam email (one way or another) , this would tell them it's a real address and most likely result in more spam.

Everybody that has my email address knows that they are not to send me any e-cards. I tell them right away when I give them my email address. I also tell them if they want to send a page to me like in my second example above to just email me a link to the page. Those two things and not putting my email address out on the web myself seems to have made a difference for me. I don't know how else to explain the total lack of spam for me.

I've just been to their website to see if there is any information on there and it seems that I should have a password and E-mail to sign in, and then I add E-mail accounts and then transfer them to Outlook Express, but I don't have a clue where I was supposed to register in the first place? Here is the site:

    NTL Mail Manager

And here is one that explains the process of transfering but not how to open the account in the first place:

    Opening Outlook Express Account

Zander--I have never used that one email address or disclosed it to anyone. And it is not a variation on either of the other two email addresses which I have used.
