    I had a Compaq Windows 98SE computer. I purchased a new computer,
HP Pavilion a1050y desktop. With a 400GB hard drive, so that I would never have to worry about the hard drive being too full and slowing down my (dial up connection) computer. I live in an area where broadband is not accessable to me.
I had everything, folders, downloads, and many Word documents backed up in MY Documents, and burned these to a CD-RW.
I installed this backup in the new computer.
My groan is that all the Word documents hesitate about 5-6 seconds before opening. First going to a gray screen before opening. Doing the same upon closing.
It is only the word documents that behave like this.
Can you see anything I may have done wrong to make the documents behave like this?

Thank you all for your consideratiion on this matter.

Seems like antivirus scanning the file on opening & closing. Just check the word status bar - it usually shows what's happening.

    rsinfo,

I don't see anything unusual on the status bar.

Do you see anything in the left down corner of Word window? Mine shows 'Requesting virus scan'.

No. Just Page 1 Sec 1 etc.

I was thinking…In Windows XP home edition. When I open My Computer, there is a folder with "˜(my name)’s Documents’. Then again when I open the C:\ Drive there is a folder named "˜Documents and Settings’…when I open Documents and Settings, there is a folder with "˜HP Owner’, when I open it, there is another folder with "˜My Documents’. Another on the desktop
All have the same saved My Documents.
Being that I installed the backed up folder from the old computer, could there be multiple My Documents? And that is why they take so long to open?
Though when I try deleting one of them, they all went to the Recycle bin and I had to restore them.
I have no idea if this is possible. Just thought I’d mention it in case it is meaningful.
I opened Properties in My Documents and on the General tab, says: Size on disk: 900 MB and Contains: 2,631 Files, 136 Folders…When I open My Documents I count 26 folders. :(

They are one & the same thing.

This is the shortcut to open your My Documents folder while browsing.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
This is the actual location where your documents are stored.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
This is the shortcut placed on your desktop for easy access.

I suggest that you run chkdsk /f and Defrag on your hard disk. Maybe it has got something to do with office installation.

I have tried Check Disk for errors and defragged a few times.
I just did the Check Disk again. Everytime I try to defrag, it tells me it is not necessary. But I did it anyhow. To now avail.

I just took notice to something else. When closing the word document, after the gray screen pause, I see a quick zipper running across the status bar, it goes so fast I cant read anything, (if there is anything there to read). Does that tell you anything about the problem?

    About that quick zipper running across the status bar;
I was able to get a picture of it with my camera.
    It said:
    "Word is saving Normal.dot:" (zipper)
This quickly runs under the gray screen just before it closes.

Hope this new information tells you something that will help.

Deleting normal.dot often solves Word problems ....

With Word closed navigate to normal.dot - it will be under ....

    C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot

You will need to 'Show hidden files and Folders' under Tools > Folder Options > View in Windows Explorer.

Delete normal.dot - it will be recreated when you next open Word and you will have to re do any customisations you may have made.

    Worth a try?

    PeteC,

I was delighted when I followed your instruction, and though it did not remove the problem, it went a lot faster.

I went back to Normal.com a few more times to delete it, then for some reason it reverted back to the long delaying gray screen.
I know, I should have left well enough alone!

Anyhow, what did you mean when you said "re do any customisations you may have made." Can you give me an example?

And thank you so much for your attention to this problem!

Try a Repar of Word through Help (in Word) - Detect and Repair.

By customisations I was referring to the ability to save changes to, say, the default font with which a new document opens. I prefer Arial 11 as the default rather than the existing default of Times New Roman (or whatever).

Format > Font > change font > Default saves the changes in Normal.dot and makes the chosen font the default for all new documents.
