    WinXP, Home, SP2

Getting an error when trying to play any ".AVI" file.
    The error is:
"AVI Plugin: Error opening device. Cannot determine the device type from the
    given filename extension.

I have WMP 10, version:10.00.00.3990 installed and also DivX player installed.
It makes no difference if i click a file from a web page or not on the web
    nothing will play.

NOTE: If i drag/drop clock.avi onto "Media Player Clasic MPC ", or DivX, it will
    play.

On the web, i get above msg. Not on the web, WMP just says it encountered
an error (trying to view "Clock.avi ").

A test site from the web is: http://membrane.com/test.html

I'm going to re-install WMP10 next but dont hold out much hope. If this is
    the fix, i'll post here.

    thanks,

    Update.

Problem must be within the mozilla/firebird plugin (both of them).
Off the web, a file will play ok. On the web i still get the error msg.

Can this be moved to the Netscale/Mozilla forum? If not, i can re-post it there.

    thanks

You're probably right about it being a plugin problem but to find out, have you tried using Internet Explorer to view an avi on the web? If it plays using IE it would be a pretty good bet that it's a problem with Firefox's plugin.

Yes, it worked in IE. Had to lower my security setting to get it but then it
    worked fine.

Does point to a FF plugin....

    thanks,

Ok, I'll move this thread to the Mozilla forum then. You'll probably have better luck there.

    Got it.

I had a backup of firefox on the external HD.
When i looked, the FF plugins folder had some extra plugins (from somewhere).
I deleted all the pluging from FF and copied all the backup plugins to FF.

Works fine now but got to wonder where those extra plugins came from.

    thanks,

Did you take note which plugins you deleted? A normal installation has only the npnul32.dll file. I, routinely, copy the entire plugins folder from an active program, and paste it into the new program folder, thus replacing what I had.
In some case there is incompatibility, so I delete the bad file. I never missed a step that way. Since.avi is a WMP format, I should have the npdsplay32.dll file.

Not really. There were something like 60+ plugins in the folder vs 23 in the
backup folder. Where those others came from, i have no idea, could have
been something i was testing. Nice to have backups handy tho.

    thanks,

Oh, i dont have npdsplay32.dll in the Firefox folder. I use Media Player Classic
for viewing (along with Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative). Very rare to
find something MPC will not display.

I do have npdsplay.dll in the Mozilla folder tho. Will have to look for the
    npdsplay32.dll.

    thanks,

Sorry. There is no 32. Just npdsplay.dll. Such file is in: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player.
Anyway, I finally notice the link in the first message, and I tested the .avi file samples. That's when I found out that winamp was my default. All files work.
I tried a couple in WMP10, and they work better.
As for clock.avi, I found this, from a search:
    # Clock.avi -

    1. Now this just plain gets a little weird. Try this.
    2. Click Start and then Run.
    3. Type CLOCK.AVI and click OK.
    4. Oddly enough, you'll see Windows Media Player launch and display a clock of sorts that simply counts from one to twelve. Go figgur. ~>shrug<~

Not so with me. It will open Winamp, and it will show a messy screen, and give a 12 sec. beeping.
It may not help you, but the performance will depend on the ability of the player to be opened and play. I can do it from Firefox, using either Winamp or WMP.

I have WinAmp but doing the run: clock.avi brought up my media player
classic. Which is good, thats the way i have it set in the file associations.
MPC ver. 6.4.8.8 is very good, havent much that it wont play....

I also have MPC set as the default in firefox and mozilla.

Glad you came back about the "32" being non-existent. Couldnt figure out why
there was no references to it on google. :)

    thanks for the feedback,
    savagcl

There is, actually, a reference or two to a 32 file. My fault, again.
