I cannot update my player because the Update link under help is grayed out and the update in the player section is greyed out.

    How do I ungray this?

Have a look at this registry key.
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer
Look in the right pane for a value named DisableAutoUpdate. If it's there and the data value is set to 1, change it to a 0 (that's a zero).
