I heard (from a man that has a computer servicing company with many industrial clients... so I believe him credible) that $MS was (or did) buy (or buy controlling interests, or ???) "all" the antiV and antiSPy software companies... including the one I use Norton/Symantec. Is this true?

He also said that Norton (and others) automatically set Windows to auto update, and or performs an auto update...not sure...

His complaint was that Gates would have 100% control of basically everthing then. That's just plain spooky....

I don't doubt that MS is interested in buy these types of things but my guess is that if they do, it won't be anywhere near all of them (I have no idea at all about Symantec, this is the first I've heard of it). I suspect they have to walk softly when doing this type of thing. Uncle Sam has been on their case for antitrust violations the way it is and I can't imagine them purposely wading back into that pool again. But then again, I could be wrong. :)

Just curious... but wouldn't be all that surprised.

I'll check back in with him when I get to town next week and find out more detail... just thought that if he knew of something that some of you might have too. Oh... all out of tin foil... sorry guy/gal.

I do know that my Norton System works and Personal Firewall does shows my Windows update settings (set as notify me only) as a "needed fix" on Nortons "one button" tuneup/repair blurb. He was saying that the newer versions reset the windows update to autoapdate... although I haven't seen mine do that yet. I've been watching.

Sorry there younguns...(and old farts too)... I'm just too used to having my machines 100% under my control with NOTHING going on without it asking first. D_mn thing is supposed to works for me and me alone... period... EVER.

Well enough of my soap box... I'll step down now.

    Later

    Why?

Basically, because I don't trust big money... i.e. gates/gov’t (one in the same in my mind) in this case. Too much power leads to controls... too much gov't leads to tyranny or other forms of mass populous control.

Let me put it this way... What if... Gates/Gov't ends up with mandatory connection full quote-unquote "updatesâ€... soon all machines will have 100% the same coding...including any controlling codes they want. All servers and connected stand-alones both industry and personal. Millions of them.

Now imagine the terrorists or some other crack pot decides to invoke. Since practically all our industry and financial systems are interconnected through the "accepted norm" for their OSs…just seems like a heck of a national security threat to me.

Just can’t believe what I’m hearing on the radio (700 am)with big international companies (like the latest thing with 21 of our port operations and UAE)… just gets spookier every day… and apparently our incompetent leaders and congressional membership seem oblivious… or at the very least, way to gullible... or worse (I won't EVEN go there).

    Anyway, you asked.
