    hi,
I'm running XP home edition SP2 on my desktop, it comes with media player 9 as standard. for my mp3 player I had to install media player 10, to connect with it (creative) so I ran the setup file for MP 10, but after every attempt to install it I got the message that it wasn't correctly installed , and it kept running version 9.
my cpu, video memory, cache... are all big enough, or strong enough... since the pc is about four months old...
This is really getting on my nerves, since my player needs a firmware upgrade, and I alreaddy uninstalled the firmware that was on it, so now it is compeltely useless.
    please, can somebody help
    thx,
    duck

what's the exact error u get?

logon as administrator and try. and i'd consider what's in startup if there's an issue. IOWs - kill off anything that may interfere and then try.

Try going to Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove programs and on the left side, click on Add or Remove Window Components and take the check out of WMP and then click OK and get out of there. Then in IE do Tools/Internet Options Delete Temp Files and Cookies. Then Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Cleanup and put a check in ALL the boxes and click OK and then Yes in the next window. Then go back and get it.

Another thing to try (along the line of what skeet mentioned)... try disabling your antivirus program while doing the installation. I've had trouble in the past with installing Microsoft programs with my antivirus running in the background.

WHAT is the exact error? is there some aversion to stating that? ;)

i mean that this doesn't seem to be an issue w/ any other machine that i can thnk of. it must be specific to u'r install. if u state what MS' error code or wording IS ... then let the fun begin.

i'm also curious about u'r 'player firmware update' issue. what? software players don't use firmware at all. can u elaborate on this? this may be the root of u'r issue.

    hhhmmmm,

I have seen this before.... I went about 4 pc's and 9 mos before I would/ could install it...

all tips given ARE great... disable anti-virus/ temp files....

ALSO, you may want to grab a reg cleaner.... uninstall it.... then run disk clean-up.... then clean out your temp files... disable you anti-virus...

run Reg-edit (a lil old, but works well..) I would not advise you to go into the registry...

    try those steps..

as skeet asked, what is the exact msg... and who dated s Svc Pack 2? There are some patches for 9... you may want to run that 1st, THEN follow the above tips....

    anyway, my 2 cents

    good luck!!!

It's a creative zen micro, and the issue is that it wants to install the firmware, but the pc can't see it as the player . my usb connection works, and my windows is telling me the zen is connected, but the program that should install the firmware asked to connect the player. the helpdesk told me that the driver for this is integrated into media player 10.
I'm running a reg cleaner, so that shouldn't be the problem. and my media player 9 stopped succeeding in upgrading a couple of months ago, it still asks me for upgrades, but they don't install properly.
    any more suggestions?

my .02 = totally remove the zen. entirely. kill it all. then update to wmp10. then reinstall the zen.

i'd also start checking the creative site for help on it's setup etc since this is almost surely their problem.

tried that aswell, but don't think the media player not installing has got a lot to do with the creative software that is installed. and I already contacted the people at creative, they told me that the only way to install the firmware is to have media player 10 on the pc to connect to the device without firmware on it. I know that it doens't make any sense, but I'm getting desperate. if next week I still haven't solved the problem I think I'll take it back to the shop.
but please, save me some money and help :)
