    Hi

I have a Toshiba Equim A60 P4 3ghz. It came preinstalled with XP SP2. I am good with computers and have setup many many networks with no problems like this one. When i connect to a network that has a dhcp server either wireless or cable i get Limited or no connectivity and no address etc gets assigned. This is a really annoying problem as i often travel for work and cannot use my laptop for the internet due to this problem. I have tried searching for some time and tried lots of "claimed" fixes that do bugger all.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

I got this from a tech at MS

    1. Click Start, click Run, type "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.

    2. Right-click the connection with an overlaid yellow symbol and click Properties.

    3. Click on the "General" tab, highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) ", and click Properties.

    4. Click on the "Alternative Configuration" tab, select the "User configured" radio box.

    5. Type 192.168.0.2 in the "IP Address" field.

    6. Type 255.255.255.0 in the "Subnet mask" field.

    7. Click OK twice.

After following the advice, every thing worked just fine on my system

Well Sven your method may or may not work. If the ip scheme of the network you are trying to connect to is 192.168.0., it would work otherwise it won't. And since there is no gateway defined, you won't be able to connect to internet. And if there is already a system with IP address of 192.168.0.2, there would be a clash.

The basic problem here is that the laptop is not able to get the IP address from DHCP.

    Rsinfo,

I think you may be correct. I went back and re-read the post.
I did not read it correctly.
Hopefully there was no harm done.

Are you facing this problem on one network only or on all the networks? I don't believe this has anything to do with SP2 but you never know.

    Things to check

Just wondering - have you tried disabling the firewall ?

If you click on the connection your trying to use do you see packet counts in either direction ?

Yeh i have tried disabling the firewall etc. Its just the dhcp will not work. I can set it up all manually but that defeats the point of dhcp when abroad on work.

Update the driver for LAN card. I have seen this behaviour in some cards where the correct driver is not installed.

There's a whole bunch of info listed here, and a search on limited in the Networking forum will pull up more info.

i'd ensure u'r LAN updates are proper. this would certainly seem to be a toshiba HW/driver issue.

me? i'd clean install it or vanilla startup minimally and then purge the existing HW from devman. then reboot and reinstall the updated drivers. i'd also check w/ tosh support on FAQ/notes about this particular machine. firmware updates would seem appropriate as they're onboard from what i gather.

ok. Just check if you have DHCP Client Service running on your laptop. It should be set to start Automatically and should be in Started state.
