Many of you may have seen
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/912945.mspx
    and
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912945
I must confess to not really understanding what this is about. At best the words Non-Security and "After you install this update, you cannot interact with ActiveX controls from certain Web pages until these controls are enabled. To enable an ActiveX control, manually click the control." in the second link make me feel this is not something I want.
Click what control? Where? (In Downloaded Program Files?)
Based on earlier threads I believe WinXP's Information Bar does not work for ActiveX for the majority of users. (That is the bar under the Toolbars that appears when a site is blocked from using ActiveX. Supposedly clicking the bar offers the choice to allow you to run ActiveX, but all that happens is that you are referred to Information Bar Help.)
I have set my Internet Sites Security to not permit ActiveX to run. When I trust a site and know I want to allow ActiveX to run, I put the site into Trusted Sites.
I feel that is all the Active X protection I need. So as mentioned, I do not feel I want this fix.
Does anyone else have any thoughts either to support or disagree? Perhaps my lack of understanding is making more of this than really exists.

I downloaded and installed it on my 98SE setup. It wouldn't allow me to run Panda's Active Scan or HouseCall. I couldn't figure out how to allow those scans to run. I ended up removing it. Someone else with XP had problems also trying to figure out how to allow the scans.

    Hi Jim!

A quote from "Microsoft Security Advisory (912945) - FAQ section ":

Don't hurry ... ... it will be forced upon us sooner or later and hopefully in a better variant.

    Arie--
Could you elaborate? Where do we make that extra click? Is it a one time click or something that has to be done each time a MS ActiveX control has to run?
Based on Whiskeyman's post, it looks as if this "Update" causes confusion at best and inconvenience, if not real trouble, at worst. That is what I was concerned about. (Hpwever, I am not sure the update is meant for Win98.)
I think I will take Christer's advice and wait.

I can't really say, as I didn't upgrade, and I'm not planning to do that.

But AFAIK you'll just need to click some prompt after the content has downloaded to launch the ActiveX control.

It has me quite confused. Trying to read between the lines it seems as though you need to go to the Download Programs File folder and click on the ActiveX control within.

I have been warning everyone at a few other forums not to download it. What bothers me is those that have WinXP set to download and install updates automatically. I have seen many people asking why their ActiveX no longer functions.

It does not download automatically AFAIK. Only security updates will download & install Automatically, and this is a non-security update.
