Media Player Opens No Matter What Disk Is Inserted in Cd Rom----EVEN DATA CD'S. It won't run allow regular programs such as printer install disks to run.

Hi and welcome to the board ED1005. :)
We need a little more information. Are you saying that Media Player opens regardless of whether you put an audio cd or a data cd in?

What do you want to happen when you put in a disk? In other words, do you want Media Player or some other player to open when you put in a music disk and maybe windows explorer to open when you put in a data disk or do you just want the autorun thing on the disk to open? Or, do you just want nothing at all to happen when you put a disk in?

I had a similar problem many moons ago. What I did was I told Sound Recorder to open everything, needless to say I broke windows good. Check and see what extensions media player is trying to open. That could give you a hint to what is causing your problem.

Open My Computer, on the menu bar select Tools=>Folder Options select file types tab.

Check the list for anyting that looks out of place.
The first extension to check would be INF, as most CD's use this to autorun.

NOTE: Don't change anything unless you are sure about the changes.

This is a copy of an email I received from Ed. Hope you don't mind Ed but it's best to post your answers to this thread. That way more people will see it and you'll have a better chance of solving this. ;)
OK, I've not run into this myself but I did a bit of searching and there seems to be one common denominator in many of the cases where people have the same problem. Do you have Easy CD Creator installed? If so, some have found that uninstalling it fixes this problem. It seems to be a problem that's related to DirectCD though, not EZCD itself. So, you could try uninstalling that first and if that doesn't work, uninstall EZCD. If this takes care of the problem and you want to keep those two programs, I guess we can cross that bridge when we come to it. :)

I found a couple of cases where the people with the problem had EZCD but they managed to fix the problem by upgrading the firmware for their CDRW drives.

One thing you can try is bypassing the autorun feature temporarily. If you hold the shift key down when you put a cd in the drive, it won't autorun. I'm curious, if you do this, do data cd's still show up as audio cds in Windows Explorer?

Another thing you can try is to disable it completely. Download TweakUI if you don't already have it. On the paranoia tab uncheck the lines that are related to playing cds automatically. Then in device manager, look in the properties of the drive (double clicking on it will get you there) and uncheck auto insert notification. Reboot you computer and see if the cds are recognized properly. If so, change those settings back to the way they were, reboot and see if things are the way they should be. Maybe this will straighten things out for you. Let us know if this any of this helps.
