Go to add-remove programs & click add-remove windows components button, remove msn.

tony t it isnt listed in add/remove in fact it is a set up you click on it and it goes into set-up. it is nowhere in the computer but on the desktop and i can not delete or move it(i was going to put it on my documents, just to get rid of it)

i have bellsouth dial-up and certainly dont need another dial-up guess i could move it off to a corner but it most annoying.

jan roberts--I am wondering if two issues are involved here.
Re MSN internet access--If I understand you correctly, this is an installation file that you have never used to install the program. I cannot imagine why it will not let you delete (like drag and drop into the Recycle Bin). But perhaps you can do so from Safe Mode or by using a program such as Move on Boot
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html
Re ccw32.vxd--This seems to be a driver probably associated with a program called Carbon Copy. You could try uninstalling the program and then it will no longer seek the missing file. Or if you want to use the program, you can download a copy of ccw32.vdx from www.driverguide.com and put in the Carbon Copy

You may have to be logged on as an adminisytrator to delete the "install msn" file.

restart the comp in dos mode and at the prompt type:

del c:\windows\desktop\name of file on desktop

-note rt click the file on desktop & then click Properties in the menu that pops up & get the real full name of the file.

tony t it will not delete in safe mode either.

right clicking on the icon and clicking properties brings up exactly what you get when you right click on the ie and click on its proerties.

got in touch with miscrosoft support they gave me toll free to msn customer support, they connected me with microsoft and they told me that windows 98 se was no longer supported.

i was wondering if i uninstalled or dropped the ie down to a 5. would that get rid of it. what do you think?

Try going to c/windows/desktop/ and locate the msn icon. Rt click/properties & set it's attributes to "hidden ".

Or, rt click the icon on desktop and select properties. (opens Internet Options) I believe somewhere in Advanced tab is a checkbox to "show internet explorer on desktop ". Uncheck it. Then just use the IE icon in quick launch or drag & copy it to desktop.

wasnt listed on c and did the thing (removing from desktop) took the explorer off didnt bother the butterfly at all.

so we are going to have 2 ways to get on dial-up (if it works). no all that icon does is "guide you through the process to create your account and connect you to the internet" back to the corner it goes.

    thanks for trying to help

I had the same problem on an old laptop and was just now able to get rid of the icon. As you found out, this isn't a file under c:\windows\desktop. It is a ghost file created from registry settings.

    Check in your registry under:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace.

Look under the keys here that have a name or value the same as the icon name or MSN Internet Access. Backup that portion of your registry first then delete the entire subkey under NameSpace. The icon should disappear.

hey lostuser, youre answering a lot of my posts. and thank you,as for the machine in question it is taking a break(with its little butterfly) because of lack of space.
i ve favorited your reply so when i bring him back out and feel brave enough to go into the registry, ill know how to do it. thanks

    Welcome.

Funny thing is I was just looking for a solution to the same problem and finally found an answer after searching through google. I saw that you may not have gotten a full answer so I joined the board and posted.

Then I couldn't help browsing around. There is not much left unanswered on this board (at least from my brief browsings). The staff here look like they have good experience.

Anyway, thanks. I'll probably check around here on and off and probably have some questions of my own.
