My PC doesn't have Power Point loaded so I went to the Microsoft website and downloaded the free Power Point Viewer. It downloaded and installed correctly but it still won't open any messages that have an extension of .ppt or .pps. When I try to open such a message I get an error message that tells me to create a program association in Control Panel/Folder Options. I've done that three times but it still won't work. I'm not an expert but I'm literate, at least in the language of PCs if not the usage! Thanks.

Ran Man--How are you creating the association of a .ppt file with PowerPointViewer?
The actual executable is PPTVIEW.EXE, not the download file ppviewer.exe. You click on the latter to install pptview.exe. Perhaps you did not do that.
The simplest way to associate, once pptview.exe is installed, is to right click on any .ppt file, Open With|choose PowerPointViewer or if it is not offered, click on "Choose Program ". Now the list should include PowerPointViewer. If so, highlight it, check the box at the bottom "Always use the selected program... "|OK. If you are not offered PowerPointView, click Browse, find pptview.exe and follow the above.

Welshjim, The way I create the association is like this; I open Control Panel, Folder Options and click on the "file types" tab. When the list comes up I scroll to ppt and/or pps then I click "new" and proceed. The program Powerpoint Viewer exists in my Programs list when I click Start/Programs and the icon for Powerpoint Viewer is beside the extension names of ppt and pps when I look at them on the list in the "file types" tab mentioned above. I'm not smart enough to figure out what I did wrong. Thanks for your help.

Try doing it Jim's way. If that doesn't work, what OS are you using? Clicking the new button isn't right if you're using XP. 98 may be different but I don't remember. I can boot to 98 though and check it out if that's the OS you're using. Can you open a ppt or pps file by opening the Powerpoint Viewer and clicking file>open?
