Hi, I am having a problem with my disk cleanup. It comes onto the screen and asks me which disk to clean, When I push ok it just doesn't respond and the message box goes away. After this happens I can no longer open programs on the desktop or through the start menu. Next I restart the computer and just before the screen goes blank all of the programs that I tried to open before, such as my documents or Internet Explorer, begin to open up but it is too late the computer has already started to restart.

Try it in Safe mode. Less programs running in the background.

This is often due to a problem with file compression. You can disable that part of the "Clean Up" by changing the Registry Key that provides it. Copy/paste the script below into WordPad and save it as NoComp.reg

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    Code:
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mic[COLOR="Black"]r[/COLOR]osoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files]
If you choose to return that feature for some reason, just edit the script to remove the - symbol and run it again. Frankly, I recommend leaving it disabled forever.

Thanks but those things didn't work. In my frustration I tried to make a seperate XP account just to see if disk cleanup would work there, I made the other account and the disk cleanup function worked correctly ... what do you make of that?
