We are using Win 2000 Professional SP 2 with Novel
networking & Office 2000. Most of our PC's are P3
    750mhz or better.

On many occasion throuout the day if we try to select a file or folder in Explorer or select a menu item in Office, the window we are working in freezes for up to 30 seconds before anything happens.

If I try to go to the start menu during this freeze, I can select other programs & continue working in other windows.

We have been unable to find any solution to this.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    Steven

I have had similar problems. I finally came to the conclusion that accessing some shares over the network will bog down the computer as it tries to refresh or whatever. I solved (or lessened) the problem by mapping myself to fewer computers/shares and by defragging my page file.

I am not sure where I got the pagedefrag utility from. Someone on this board pointed me to it, but it may have been before the site was hacked last fall.

If no one else replies with the location of pagedefrag send me a private message and I will send it to you.

    Hello,

I have found one simple way to defrag the page file. This should be done with caution. IF you have two partions this method can be used with relative ease. Set the page file on the C:\ partition to start and end at 2.

Create a page file on the other partion to start and end at the same number coresponding to how much actual RAM you have. This prevents fragmentation since the start and end point are the same. This causes the page file to start and end at the same point which forces the computer to spread evenly the page file in oposite directions until your size request has been completed.

If you do not have an additional hard drive or partion, you can set the start and end points of the page file to 2, then re-boot your pc and re-create the page file after next boot. (A word of caution, on older machines running Windows NT with low RAM, the computer may take a LONG time to initially boot due to the low amount of the page file. In one occurance it took one hour to sucessfully boot on a 65 MHz NT4 machine with 16 Mb RAM. Then I set the page file sucessfully at the same begin and end points, rebooted the pc, and all was well in the pc world again.)

To keep the page file from becomming fragmented, set the begin and end point the same exact number. In this way it never becomes fragmented and you do not need additional software to do this.

In addition to the regular page file, there are a number of other bits that can't really be dealt with while the system is running.

The pagefile defrag program is probably the free one from Sysinternals. It will tell you how much fragmentation and can easily be set to defrag at next boot or at every boot.

I have used this since NT4 days and it does great with any of the NT-based systems. It is loaded on all our servers and on any PC I will be using.

    Well,

Reseting the page file did speed up the overall system. However, I still have the problem of no response at times when a selection is made.

The no response time is less from up to 30 seconds to up to 15 seconds.

I will try the utility that was posted & see if that helps.

    Thanks for the help
