    All of a sudden, my Mozilla browser stopped automatically opening .GIF images. I had to tell it what program to use as the default. Now when it goes to open a gif file, TWO more Mozilla windows open, one is actually blank. It also asks me every time what program to use where it did this automatically itself before.

    I made no changes to the browser and cannot figure out why it's not just opening these files in a second window for viewing.

    I'm also not using tabs and have things setup just like the classic style look.

    Anyone know what may have happened and how I can get it to open these gifs by itself again?

    Kenny,

    What program do you use to open gif files? I also assume you mean Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1.

    If you have IrfanView installed, I would definitely use it to open ALL images.

    Hi Ramona...

    I have my PhotoShop program setup to open all image files off my hard drive BUT prior to a few days ago, when viewing GIF images that were linked on a webpage, a second Mozilla window would simply open up and the image would show in that window.

    Now, when I click on a GIF image, a box opens asking me what I want to use to open the file or if I wish to save it to my hard drive. That did not happen before as the picture would just open in another browser window.

    I have no idea what happened.

    Kenny,

    Open Windows Explorer, and click on Tools | Folder Options | File Types
    Scroll down to either GIF or Photo Shop and see what program is selected to open the GIF file type. If it doesn't point to Photo Shop, then Edit the File Association.

    Ramona,

    It points to my Photoshop program but that's not the problem i'm trying to figure out here. Yes, when clicking on a GIF image that is on my hard drive, Photoshop opens the image as expected.

    When I clicked on a GIF image that was linked within a webpage, however, Mozilla opened a second window up that showed that GIF image in it. I could save the file, etc. from that second window that was opened.

    That is what suddenly stopped working that i'm trying to fix. That was nice as I didn't have to even play around with Photoshop and could just view the image in Mozilla then save it to my hard drive. I have no idea why it stopped working as it was.

    We may need a link to "GIF" images you are looking at.
    For now, lets see what you have in the following ...
    TOOLS | OPTIONS | Download Tab
    Go to bottom, see "Download Actions "
    Click on View and Edit Actions.
    "Download Action" screen is displayed , click on Maximize for full screen.
    On the far Left of screen, see "Extension" column.
    Look for any "GIF" entries. Any found, click/highlight, click Remove Action.
    When done, click on "Close" Tab. Ok out of previous screens.
    Close / open FF for good measure. Try your GIF URL views.

    Dennis, all that does is bring up the box which asks what program I wish to use to open GIF files with. If I leave it at the default setting that is there, which I figured would actually correct this situation, my Photoshop program opens the file.

    Kenny,

    Give us some links where you are trying to open the GIF files if you can.

    Just for the sake of troubleshooting:

    Do you have JavaScript enabled?

    Enable:
    Tools | Options | Content | Load Images

    Disable:
    Tools | Options | Content | Load Images | for the originating web site only

    Ramona,

    Yes, javascript is enabled.

    http://www.usahockey.com/06oly/main_site/main/women// There are a few listed there. This is where I first noticed things were not working as they once did.

    Kenny,

    First: backup your mimetypes.rdf file, located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename

    Next: Open the file with Wordpad
    Click on Edit | Find
    Type: image/gif

    You should find three entries for image/gift (if not you can add them)

    These are my entries in the mimetypes.rdf file for image/gif:

    Code:
    <RDF:Description RDF:about= "urn:mimetype:handler:[B]image/gif[/B] "
                       NC:alwaysAsk= "true "
                       NC:useSystemDefault= "true "
                       NC:saveToDisk= "false ">
        <NC:externalApplication RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:externalApplication:[B]image/gif[/B] "/>
      </RDF:Description>

    Scroll down to find this entry:

    Code:
    <RDF:Description RDF:about= "urn:mimetype:externalApplication:application/x-java-archive "
                       NC:prettyName=" "
                       NC:path=" " />
      <RDF:Seq RDF:about= "urn:mimetypes:root ">
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-csv "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:video/mpeg "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-zip-compressed "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/msword "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/scpls "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/x-pn-realaudio "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-authorware-map "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/mpeg "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:video/quicktime "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/vnd.rn-realaudio "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:video/x-ms-asx "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/mpegurl "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-crossword "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/x-mpegurl "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/zip "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/vnd.rn-realmedia "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:image/wmf "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-tar "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-shockwave-flash "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:audio/x-mpeg "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/vnd.intu.qfx "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/pdf "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:application/x-msdownload "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:text/rtf "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:unknown/unknown "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:image/tiff "/>
        <RDF:li RDF:resource= "urn:mimetype:[B]image/gif[/B] "/>
    Now try an image here: http://members.aol.com/dcreelma/imagesite/otherstuff/mailrelated/mail.html

    Did Firefox ask what to do with the file this time?

    Ramona,

    At your link the GIFs open in a new browser window as they were doing for me originally at that USA Hockey site. Maybe it's something they did there at USA Hockey?!

    Thanks for your help!

    Kenny,

    Yes, it is the site, and since the link I gave you worked, then I think you're O.K. ;)

    I came into this so late that I don't if I am eligible, any more.
    My default is Corel Photo House, and, if I select to open with default, it will open, nicely. I have checked to do the action , automatically, but with each picture I have to give my ok. I suppose that it should be that way, in case I change my mind, and want to download, and save the picture.
    K-meleon0.9, instead, has only one option i.e. to download the picture.
    With Ramona's link, I have either option, i.e. open in another window, or right click|save.
    Site, or not, I like what FF1.5.0.1 does.
