When I run chkdis.exe it does not run because I get < cannot open volume for direct access > message. Something is preventing it from opening. I have running sp2 on the machine. I went to microsoft site and found this occurs when the virus antisoftware or some other hard disk monitor software is running. I have disabled and even removed the software but I still cannot get the program to run. any ideas where to look next? Thanks

thanks for your reply. My computer does not have an instillation cd as it has a hidden partition. Should I get a cd from h/p as I can from their website?

I would definitely get the CD from HP. I am not familiar with HPs so I don't know if you can get the Recovery Console with it. Someone else will need to answer that.
