    Hello,
I just installed Netscape 8.1 and there are too many extra horizontal lines between the toolbars. Does anybody know how to remove them?

Also if I don't want the tabbed browsing how do you turn it off?

    Thanks for any help :)

    Genestoy,

You can right click anywhere on the Toolbars and select "Customize" in the drop down menu. You can then remove or add items. I'm not clear on what you mean by too many lines. Do you mean blank Toolbars? If so, you can remove or add Toolbars in the "Customize" settings.

To avoid the Tabs completely, click on:
Tools | Options | Tabbed Browsing
Enable: Hide the tab bar when only one web page is open

I can't imagine not taking advantage of this terrific option. Why open multiple Windows, when you can move between tabs in ONE window to access multiple web pages. I'll just bet if you use Tabbed Browsing for two weeks, you will never be without it again.

Thanks for the response. I have done the checkmark in the tab browsing section before you suggested it and I still get tabs, so that does not work.

As for the extra lines, yes I have two extra blank toolbars that take up about an inch below the top bar that has the File, Edit, View, etc in it. The two blank toolbars are between the top File, Edit, View, etc. and the navigation and personal bars. I see nothing in the customize area to remove them? Takes up a lot of wasted space. Weird.

UPDATE--I just reset the toolbars to the default and the extra blank toolbars disappeared and I started over, all okay now, but does anybody know how to make the Google search bar box bigger (longer)?
    Thanks - Gene

As for the size of the Search box, what you see is what you get. But, it does not matter because, unless you enter a long search, and forget what you wrote halfway through, Google will remember. I prefer Google over any other Search engine, because it suggests a correct search, when you enter.
As for the Tabs, it is a reason why I gave up on NS8.x. It wants to force on you Tabs after Tabs. There is a way out, though, by unchecking almost everything in Tools|Options|Tabbed Browsing. And, make sure that you scroll to the end of the long page, when you find yourself opening tabs if you use Bookmarks, or anything else.
The suggestion from Ramona is vital, but not enough, in my experience. And, beside, I want to use more than one tab as home group!
It seems that the developers had never seen Tabs, and went wild.
I have only one box checked. The one warning me about closing if I have tabs open.

I agree with you that they went overboard on some stuff! I think I have the tab stuff figured out the same as you do. I remember seeing something somewhere about editing the css in one of the Netscape files to make the search box wider, but can't seem to find it

    Genestoy,

Perhaps this is what you're remembering:

    http://forevergeek.com/articles/outfox_outsearch_with_firefox.php

Change the width of the search bar

The default search bar width is rather small, probably big enough for 20 characters. You can fix this if it bothers you by changing the width by editing your userChrome.css. The userChrome.css file is located in the "chrome" directory in your profile directory. The Firefox Help site has a page explaining how to get to your userChrome.css, if you're not familiar with where your profile folder is. Once you have your userChrome.css, put this bit in there to increase its relative weight so taht it appears longer:

    #search-container { -moz-box-flex: 350 !important; }

Thanks again Ramona, I had found that just a while ago also and tried it and that did not work either  must be for an older version? or I am doing something wrong and I have edited css before.

    Gene,

This particular code decreases the length of the Location Bar. Try setting it to:

    #search-container { -moz-box-flex: 450 !important; }

    Ramona,
Sorry but nothing seems to work. I have tried all sorts of numbers, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650. It is like Netscape isn't even reading that file userChrome.css ?

    Gene,

I rarely use Netscape 8.1, simply because it is very user UNfriendly, buggy, crashes/freezes frequently, and I have found Firefox to be far superior...

I can't imagine why you can't get the code to work, but who knows! Perhaps someone on the AOL Forum can give you a code. You can see how much shorter my Location Bar is, in this Screen Shot.

OK, I figured it out. To start with there is the Program Files> Netscape> Netscape Browser> defaults> profile> chrome> userChrome.css file (was named something else to start with, but I forgot what) and this is where you get the file to edit, but it does not work from here and needs to be placed in Documents & Settings.

That is what needs to be edited and THEN copied as userChrome.css and moved to Documents & Settings> User> Application Data> Netscape> NSB> Profiles> uylsnjm3.default> chrome

You would think it would be a LOT more user friendly. By the way the only number that made it go all the way to the address bar was 150 in the string. If I could now figure out the string to make the address bar a little shorter then all would be well and I could stretch the search box a little more as this made it twice as big :)

    Gene,

No, the userChrome.css file to be edited is located in the chrome folder in the Profiles folder, NOT the Program Files folder.

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Netscape\NSB\Profiles\*.profilename\chrome

I know. That is what I was trying to say. There are TWO of the same folders on the computer, one with the userChrome.css that has another name by default, and another profiles folder without the file and the second paragraph in my post above is where you have to place the file as it is not there by default.

    Gene,

You use the userChrome-example.css in the Profiles folder, and then rename to userChrome.css, samo for userContent-example.css. :)

That is correct, BUT when you rename it you also must move it to the folder where I said (Documents & Settings> User> Application Data> Netscape> NSB> Profiles> uylsnjm3.default> chrome), at least that is the way it is in Windows XP and the only way Netscape found it. I also did a search of other forums and found this out. Renaming it and leaving it where it was did nothing and now it works.

I must not be making myself very clear. As you can see from this Screen Shot.

I used the userChrome-example.css file, and added the line of code. I then saved the file as userChrome.css. You can see the location of the file in in the chrome folder located in the Profile.

Nothing was moved or copied? I used what was already there? It is no different for Windows 98SE than in XP.

If the workaround you used works for you that's fine, but as you said, a lot of unnecessary work...

    Gene,

For reference, here are the instructions for both the userChrome.css and userContent.css file: userChrome.css
    http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/edit#css

Even though written for Firefox, NS 8 is uses the Firefox source code

    userChrome.css
This file sets the display rules for various elements in the Firefox user interface and is located in the sub-folder called chrome in your profile folder. As with user.js, this file does not exist by default, so you need to create it before you can start adding your preferences. There's actually an example file that exists by default, called userChrome-example.css. Basically, you can just rename that file by removing the -example part.

    userContent.css
This file sets the display rules for web content and is located in the sub-folder called chrome in your profile folder. As with user.js, this file does not exist by default, so you need to create it before you can start adding your preferences. As with userChrome.css, there is an example file that exists by default, called userContent-example.css. Basically, you can just rename that file by removing the -example part.
