Check your Event Logs > System Events. Windows Defender is logged there.

You can also check if the app is running from Task Manager, look for the process wdfmgr.exe

    Yep, mine too.

Tools > General Settings, scroll down (should be on by default).

    Arie,

Thank you for that - I have now resolved the definitions update problem.

However, I don't have wdfmgr.exe running, but MSASCui.exe is. This I think is something to do with Defender because I had to give it access to the Internet when installing Defender.

Where are the event logs located ?

In trying to find out what MSASCui.exe is I came across the following site which may be of benefit to others if they have not already seen it

    http://russelltexas.com/malware/defender.htm

It would appear that MSASCui.exe and MsMpEng.exe are loaded by Defender and use 8.5Mb and 11.5Mb of memory (on my system).

wdfmgr.exe is part of Windows Media Player 10 or above - nothing to do with Windows Defender :)

    hi Guys,

    Any more reactions to WD?

I don't want to run it realtime, is the scanning any better?

    Regards - Charles

Defender seems to be working OK now, except for the lack of a history file.

A full scan of 335,000 objects took about 35 minutes. Seems to be more thorough than Norton Internet Security 2005 that only scans about 297,000 objects.

Microsoft AntiSpyware never found anything on my system so I can't compare. Yet Adaware and my ISP's (BT Internet) spyware software continually drag out items that are of a dubious nature. I also use Spyware Blaster, which has never notified me of anything untoward.

After Installing Defender, Microsoft AntiSpyware leaves a folder behind in Windows/Programs which can be deleted.

See you are with BT - I have BT Yahoo Broadband and Defender picked up btwebcontrol.dll which I had to allow.

Check out the History button - lists those 'nasties' it picked up and the action you decided upon. If it has found nothing requiring action that section will be empty.

When I was offered and installed the latest update for Defender from Windows Update, I did it. I was not told I must reboot. But when I tried to run a scan with Defender, I got an error message. On Reboot, all was OK. I hope that is the solution in the future.

Achilles--a Full Scan with Defender takes about an hour on my PC (about 20GB content on my hard drive). So unless I have lots of time I plan to only run a Quick Scan. That takes only about 3-4 minutes.

charlesvar--My very brief experience is that Defender will nag you if you do not run a scan every three days. I have not found how to turn that off. But if you run a Quick Scan, Defender is satisfied.

How about "set it and forget it "? :)

Under Tools | General Settings, set it to:
    • Automatically scan my computer (recommended), then select a:
Scan frequency: (such as "Daily ")
Time of day: (whenever your PC is normally running)
Type of scan: (such as "Quick Scan ")
    • Check for updated definitions before scanning

    • Apply actions on detected items after scanning

SpywareDr--I suspect your post was in response to mine just above.
The reason is that I usually shut my PC off when I know I will not use it for a long period and that varies from day to day, and I shut it off every night.
Making it available to Windows Defender to scan when it wants to is really not too convenient.
I am willing to keep the PC on one day a week and allow WD to run scans then. But not every three days.

    Hi All
I have been following this thread to see an outcome, As to whether or not to update MASW.

OK, Should I uninstall before updating? or does it matter?

    After installing and updating, reboot....correct?

    Thanks
    Geri

    From the Release Notes ....
You may still prefer to uninstall MSAS first and reboot - maybe clear out any remaining references to MSAS in the Registry too. Your call :)

    Hi Jim,

About the three day scan nag, I've read that is a bug to be fixed.

In any case, I'm going to wait to upgrade to beta 2. MSAS is still being up updated and because I've been out of the loop for a while as well.

    Regards - Charles

No, you need the setup software for v1.0.701

I or someone can send it to you.

When and if you do get it and uninstall beta 2 and re install MSAS, under options > Settings > Auto Updater, untick Software Update Notifications.

    Regards - Charles
