This is a noob question, but what is the difference between the folder permissions and the folder security? This is in reference to sharing folders on a 2k3 server, i have to set folder permissions, then folder security. Is it that the folder security allows you to further customize the permissions?
    thanks

Folder Security is trumped by Folder Permissions

Folder Permissions are the NTFS Permissions.
Folder Security is the Shaare Permissions.

Typically what I do is set a share to "Everybody" (Or Authenticated Users)and then use NTFS Permissions to lock things down as necessary.

Lets say USER-A had Folder Permissions to get to SHARE-1, but no Folder Security. USER-A could not get in to SHARE-1.

Lets say USER-A had Folder Security to get to SHARE-1, but no Folder Permissions. USER-A could not get in to SHARE-1.

Lets say USER-A had Folder Permissions to get to SHARE-1, and Folder Security. USER-A could get in to SHARE-1.

The theme..... you've GOT to have Folder (NTFS) Permissions in order to get into a share. If you're running a shared folder on a non-NTFS partition though then it doesn't matter and Folder Security determines everything.
