I've lost functionality in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and have tried several things - using open with etc, but no go. I THINK this trouble started when I installed Security Update for Windows Xp KB912919. When I try to uninstall, the wizared warns I MAY lose functionality in some other programs, hotfixes and security updates. Also, installing SP2 may have caused this problem but I'm not certain as I can't recall exactly when it started - but I think it followed SP2 install.
I did read somewhere on MS that the KB912919 may cause Picture and Fax Viewer to stop functioning, so I assume removing the update will restore function. Please - some advice. I have tried several fixes - Start>Run
    1)In the Run box, typed: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
2)If this doesn’t work, try typing this in the Run box: regsvr32 /I shimgvw.dll
Neither of these worked. I had installed SP2 but it messed up other things, like my folder views, so I uninstalled it - but still have serious probs with folder views.:(
BTW, I cant' even find Windows Picture and Fax Viewer on my computer with Search of manually opening files. Anyone know where it is?
    Thanks in advance.

Did you try rebooting after the running the regsvr32 commands?

You can try downloading and running Kelly's fix. Maybe it'll fix it for ya.

Line 80, left side. Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer

I don't believe there is an executable file for it. As far as I know it's a function of shimgvw.dll. Needs to be called by the OS. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this please. :)

Yes I did reboot. Tried it all several times. I should have mentioned I tried the fix at Kelly's-Korner, and yet another at Ask Leo's site. Neither has helped. Strangely enough, my ScreenSaver works fine and it is set to run from the MyPictures folder where all my unviewable jpegs are.
Thanks again for the help and I hope you don't give up yet.

I suggest you run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > OK - note the space before the forward slash and have your XP installation CD handy.

Only one other way possible - that is if you have a folder on your drive named I386 - that's capital I not numerical 1. Search for that - it can be of various sizes - you are looking for around 475 Mb. If it is there follow the instructions outlined here ....

    http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

You will need to modify two registry keys to point to the location of the I386 folder, if present ....

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePackSourcePath

    In both cases ....

    ServicePackSourcePath - Data = C:\
    SourcePath - Data = C:\

This is for the I386 folder located on the root drive, C:\ - you should substitute the Data value of C:\ for the location of your I386 folder.

Before you attempt to change anything in the registry back it up

If the above does not work or is not possible consider downloading Microsoft RAW File Viewer - a version of Picture and Fax Viewer which reads digital camera RAW files and also jpegs.

Here, possibly, is another way to reregister shimgvw.dll
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic39047.html#shimbatr
The third section from the bottom gives instructions to register that file, but then the instructions say that using "2" will unregister. I suspect that is an error.
As far as a substitute for Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, I would think Irfanview (free) would be an excellent choice.
    www.irfanview.com
P.S.--In babbler's first post he says he tried regsvr32 /I shimgvw.dll. Would the capital I make any difference?

The syntax is wrong - not only the capital I

PeteC, search doesn't turn up I386, so I guess I'm out of luck as to the instructions.

Welshjim, going to give that batch file a try

Thanks to you both for your continuing help. I'll report back asap.

babbler--Thanks for posting back. Sometimes a workaround is better than solving the original problem! :)
