I downloaded the latest Macafee update and was playing a game of solitaire while I waited, the download finished and was doing it`s thing, installing the down load. I attempted to leave the solitaire game before installation was done, and the computer locked up.
I had to shut the switch off (after trying escape and control, alternate ,delete) and when I booted back up and it was scanning the files it advised me to save data, 1.6, Meg to File 000.chk and type command. I did this and also made a undo disk. I still have the old version (1019.0) of Macafee but the new (3000. 0) didn`t get installed, I don`t have the foggiest notion of what to do now. I don`t know where the 0000.chk file is or what to do after I find it and type command!
Maybe this should be posted to the Macafee tech site, but I`ve always had the best of luck getting help here.
Windows 95 B, plenty of hard drive, 64 M of RAM, 133 cpu, amatuer old mans computer, but we fit each other.

Do a Find on FILE0001.CHK (or use *.chk since there may be more than one). If I remember right you should find the .CHK files in the root of C:\

If you want to see what kind of data is inside the chk file, you could open it in wordpad. Chances are it will be gibberish, though.

Although I've heard you can sometimes recover data from .CHK files I always delete them.

    You said,

"I still have the old version (1019.0) of Macafee but the new (3000. 0) didn`t get installed "

If it were me I would first look for information from McAfee too see if there is anything special to do after a failed installation of the particular update. I would then try reinstalling the update.

If you give a link to the McAfee update page or tell us what kind of update we are discussing then someone might come up with more information for you.

You`re right, gibberish in Wordpad, Thanks for the reply.
I was attepting to upgrade my Macafee Virus scan 6.02.1019.00 to the latest version 6.02.3000.0. also the latest DAT files. I do this weekly and never had any problems before.
I`m attempting to contact Macafee, no luck so far.
I had three .CHK files, I take it from your previousPost it`s OK to delete them ?
From a novice` stand point it seems that I could just reinstall and be OK but by your advice I take it that I should check with Macafee, before doing that?
I`ve done enough " click in haste, repent at leisure" for one day :)
Thanks again, I`ll let you know what develops.

    Hi again,

It should be ok to delete all .chk files.

I did a liitle more checking and I found the following on the McAfee Virusscan 6 WebBoard - http://208.31.156.32/~VSC1

You could try posting your own question on the McAfee Webboard or search the board. I did a search and found the following:
    (hope this helps).

The other day when I talked to a tech he didn't know how to resolve my problem so he told me
I needed to download a patch. When I started reading the page He had sent me to a page with
an upgrade for 6.x versions. {Still not sure what the x is for --all versions.????]
    I have version 6.02.1019.1
and the upgrade he sent me to was Version---6.02
06/04/02 ---VS060230.exe. Do I need to download this upgrade?
My update on my virus scan does not indicate that I
do. This is by far the worst tech support Ive ever received
on any product and the sad part is the product is just as bad.

The McAfee VirusScan VS060230.exe patch is an update from the previous 6.02 patch.
This patch was released to address system slowdown and hang up issues as a result of
VirusScan, encountered by certain pc configurations.

The filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number) files are created when scandisk runs into a section of data and can't figure out where or to what it belongs (the "lost clusters" thing). So it tells you if found stuff and if you elect to save it, you get file0001.chk. Next time file0002.chk. And so on.

Almost always just trash and of no use whatever. I always elect to not save unless I have a problem and suspect some data I might need is in the file (happened once that I can remember).

    Moore,

If you do end up reinstalling the patch, just make sure you empty your C:\Windows\Temp contents beforehand (I did see that in one of the Webboard posts) and make sure you have closed all background programs. I do a Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end task on all except explorer and systray after a fresh reboot.

I'm thinking that your original problem most likely had to do with running solitaire during the install! I say that becuase one of the issues addressed by the patch is "Fixed FreeCell and Solitaire compatibility issue "

    Good luck,

    Alice

I was think along the same line but not just about Freecell and Solitaire.

Having had roughly the same problem ( but with a Microsoft dwnld/ install ) I found it best to not run or do anything during the download or install. I just closed an open Window and damaged the install. It quit right where it was.

ANY little glitch druing either can create problems.

    Thanks to all hands.
From now on on a download I`ll just let it do it`s thing and suffer through the time it takes, without solitaire.
Got the upgrade and DAT file downloaded and everything went smooth as could be.

    Hi Moore,

Glad to hear you were successful this time!

If you save your downloads to a folder on your hard drive for installing later, you don't have to worry. I almost never use Internet Explorer for downloading ...using Netscape forces you to save an .exe file while IE lets you open the file,

It's safe browsing the web or doing whatever else you want while downloading, as long as the update (setup file) is being SAVED, not opened at the end of the download. You just need to close all running programs when you actually run the setup program later on.

    Hi Billybob.

Yep, I agree it's best not to do ANYTHING else during an installation.

The few times I've used IE to run an update (mainly from WindowsUpdate) I made sure to disable my antivirus program and close any unnecessary background tasks, then sat there when it got close to the completion of the download and let IE do it's thing.
