    Duel boot so Im typing this from 98SE. I have XP Home on other drive.

    This morning, had notice there were XP updates ready to install. I did this, then asked for restart. Normal XP screen come up, then for first time, a log on screen comes up, but NO user option box to click on.

    All I get is "select user to log on to" or something. I have pic of what it looks like if I need to send.

    Only other option is to restart comp. I can get into xp in safe mode, ive tried system restore to yesterday, no go. I also created another account in safe mode called test. I restart, and I get into TEST profile, but not mine. It does so my normal user profile if I go to accounts. Well I did another system restore back to yesterday, and then Im back to no users to select again.

    All this happened after todays XP updates.

    ===========
    Update, I ran virus scan, all clean.. does anyone have a clue at all?
    thanks

    Great....so now what? I'll check out the directions on tryin to repair this. Just an update.. At one time I was able to go into safe mode. I checked on the option to skip something for logon, now it asks for a logon password which I never set up in the first place. Wrong icon for admin also and all it says is Administrator now. (spell check). Now the comp hangs while tryin to go into safe mode so I cant do that now either.

    Will try holding shift key, and will try last known working setup,, which I think I tried onec already.

    thanks, any other suggestions would be great.

    This artical was writen last October, the problem didnt happen till this morning after I did an update which it said I needed.

    Have you tried leaving the password box blank?

    If you do a have a regular Windows XP disc and use it for the repair you shouldn't lose anything. At least you're not supposed to. Boot from the cd and skip the first repair choosing to install windows. It will (or should) find your windows installation and ask if you want to repair it. Sort of condensed there but that's basically how it goes.

    How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

    Take time to read the warnings.

    Adding to Zander's warning, if you have very important data on there, is it possible to pull the hard drive and use another working computer to save the data before attempting the repair install? You may or may not lose your stuff...never know until it's too late.

    The other thing I'm wondering, since you can get into Safe Mode, can you run a System File Check from there?

    ps congrats on being ORANGE, Zander!:D

    I WAS able to get into safe mode, now I cant. But will try again tomarrow. Been a bad day all day so I'll sleep on it. If I dont, might have to dust off the old shotgun and use comp for target practice lol. First time ive had problems with XP too.
