Installing SATA drive as secondary on asus K8Vse deluxe

Read your other thread and see your problem. Don't know about the maximum drive you can use but doubt the statement about the 300GB drive not working on the new MoBo. Suggest you use the pause key (far right on top row) to watch BOOT on your monitor and read it carefully. All your instructions are there. You don't need to get into the BIOS on that MoBo to set it up, IMO, except to set the boot order as usual. Try F8 when it asks and select the boot device. If both your drives are SATA, no problem; if one is PATA (IDE), then some fiddling may be necessary. I wouldn't try to make the new drive boot if the older one works. Not that much difference in size.

BTW, the power connectors are irrelevent; just so they work.

 

I have since found out that the new drive is a SATA2 drive after a lot of research, even though it says noting on the drive and nothing on the advert from the place I bought it.
I have been looking into this and saw a review of the drive, see below.

Does this mean I could still get it to work properly on my system if I bought a SATA PCI card ?

 

SATA 2 should be backward compatible with SATA1 or am I missing something here ?

 

Limited experience with SATA 2 Drives but have found them to be yes, no and maybe re: backwards compatability depending on the motherboard, BIOS and on-board controller. Have used about a half dozen Samsung SATA 2 160 Gig drives and even though there is a jumper to throttle back to 1.5 Gig transfer speeds, this does not work with all motherboards (or lets just say, I've experienced a couple of exceptions).

 

Interesting. One more thing to keep at back of my head when installing a new system.
