    Hi:
I recently update to Firefox/1.5.0.1 and keep getting this error message when I attempt to access a web site: (I have to click on retry and it gets me there the 2nd try)

    SERVER NOT FOUND

    FIREFOX CANT FIND THE SERVER

    * Check the address for typing errors such as
    ww.example.com instead of
    www.example.com

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

    Lindylou,

Here is a step by step troubleshooting page from the Mozilla Firefox Knowledge Base: Error loading any website

After you try the above workarounds, and if you continue having problems let us know.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Ramona!
There's a lot of stuff there and it may take me awhile to go thru it all, but I'll let you know the outcome.
    Thanks again!

You're most welcome! Don't rush going through the different workarounds. Just be thorough, and you will no doubt find a solution...

    Lindylou,
how did you update to 1.5.0.1?
I had the same problem, very frequently when 1.5 first came out, and I had some problems, off and on when I uninstalled 1.5, and installed the complete 1.5.0.1. There were many annoyances, to the point that uninstall 1.5.0.1, and did a clean install of 1.5, using the same download file, used before, as well as the same profile. Things got much better, and, now I have 1.5.0.1 using the incremental update. I don't know what went on, but things are almost perfect. But still I have the same site not found, once in a while. I have given up trying again. In some cases, the reload button seems to do a better job. But, the best bet is to try later. I have not kept track of the sites, so I don't know if it has anything to do with the site, or what. Very strange. It does not happen with any of the other programs which I have.

When I remove the old copy and install the new version of Fx, I always lose the "OPEN" function of my URL:HTTP file type. My Internet shortcuts won't work until I remove the old "OPEN" and put in a new one.

I think it is because removing the old one causes the OPEN function to get lost?

    re stuff

    Westside:
I think I got the update at the Firefox site, but I remember reading that the latest version is not always the best. If I don't get this fixed (and I haven't had a chance to try Ramon's tips), I may go to the older version.

Bill......... "won't work until I remove the old "OPEN" and put in a new one. "
How do I do this please??

    Thanks,
    Lindylou

    Lindylou,

Newer is usually better in this case as Version 1.5.0.1 addresses security vulnerabilities, and you do want to update to this version. I would suggest that you do a "clean" install, and by that I mean:

    Download the full version ( Firefox Setup 1.5.0...> 30-Jan-2006 19:11 4.9M)
    Uninstall the existing version
Make a copy of the plugins folder located in: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox (If you have added plugins)
Then: Delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder
    REBOOT THE PC

    Now install the new version

I should add that this is after you have resolved the existing problem, which is in your Profile. Installing and uninstalling has no effect on the Profile.

    Lindylou,

I am familiar with your error, and I have received it, but it was random, and never interfered with my connection. See this Screen Shot

There are also some unconfirmed bugs which allude to the same error. This is the Bug Search if you're interested in going through them...

Since you are unable to connect, the sooner you go through the options on the KB web page I referenced, the sooner you can solve this. Especially the "All Programs are Having Problems" section. It could be your ISP.

Have you tried accessing the Internet with IE?

I am having problems understanding this. Lindylou says, in the first post that she got FF1.5.0.1. Later she says that she got it from the Firefox site, I guess as 1.5.0.1. Then Ramona says to download it (again?).
But, it is possible that another download will help. I don't know about selective inability, or I don't understand the original question at all. One or two websites or any website?

    Westside,

Since Lindylou is unable to connect to the Internet, a new install might actually help. I could be wrong, but it will do no harm.

    Lindylou,

Have you checked the settings here:
    Tools | Options | General
When you click on "Connection Settings ", is "Direct connection to the Internet enabled?

    I think it's fixed!

    Hi Everyone:
The originial problem was that Firefox wouldn't allow me to access a web site when I clicked on it. I usually got in on the "Retry" click. It's not that I wasn't able to connect to the Net at all; I was.
So I changed the settings in Zonealarm (as Ramona suggested) and so far, I'm able to get to any website I click on. I didn't have to reinstall (at least not yet).
    Thanks everyone!
    Lindylou

Which change in ZA? I got lost with this long thread, and can't find any reference to such settings. I, also use Zone Alarm.

    fixing zonealalarm

    Westside:
This is what I did and seemed to have worked...(changing the checkmarks to all green)

Some versions of ZoneAlarm have issues with Firefox/Mozilla Suite. Make sure you are using the latest version.

When you need to allow access after saying "Deny ", try opening the Zone Alarm Control Center, Selecting Program Control on the Left, Programs on the top, Finding Firefox (or Thunderbird or Mozilla) in that list and changing the Access [/COLOR]Internet (Red)X or (Blue)? to a (Green) √ Check Mark.

    Hope that helps,
    Lindylou
