petec its 509pm here, okay talked to dell and they are sending me an o/s disk told her that i could not change anything in window set up in add/remove since it asked for disk and i didnt have one. also getting remote they forgot to send or if they i dont know how it look (yeah right). so everything is going to be on hold until i get that cd

another thing,i got a 160gb hard drive how do i know how it is partitioned or if it is??? and what is the difference between what dell has already sent me and the os disk?:) :)

    Open up Windows Explorer ....

C:\ is your root drive (hard drive) on which Windows is installed.

If the next drive D:\ is a CD-ROM, CD-RW or DVD-RW then your drive is not partitioned.

    Another way to check ....

Right Click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. If only one volume is shown and Disk 0 is represented by a single 'box' you have a single partition equal to the capacity of your hard drive.
I rather think that the reinstallation disk is a Recovery disk after all and Dell are sending you a full copy of the XP installation CD.

i used the my computer>manage>disk management and looks as if disk 0 is in 3 parts
1st is sort of shaded and has 55mb.(healthy eisa) fat
2nd is c: with 133.31gb ntfs and heathly
    3rd is 4.69gb fat32 unknown but healthy
is this going to be a problem? you mention partitions in your reply and i googled eisa and now it has to do intel processors or something like that. trying to give all the info i can while waiting for dell to send the cd(and the remote)

one more thing the dvd is for xp media center 2005 yet when i right click on my computer it shows xp midia center 2002 sp2 which is right? how do i find out which one is really on this machine?:)

    - this is a hidden partition probably containing Dell diagnostic tools or similar with a special format. My HP laptop had the same - no longer :)
Your main drive - this is what you see in Windows Explorer.
Not sure what that is offhand.

If you make a clean install 1 & 3 can be deleted and absorbed into 2 although they should not be a problem if left.

Right click on My Computer > Properties will show you which version of XP is installed - the DVD is obviously the latest version.

    Pete,

Not sure if this will be of any help, but...

Since Jan didn't give her Computer Model, I searched in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 on the Dell site and came up with numerous pages.

Also, came up with these pages from the Knowledge Base. Hope this isn't totally useless!

My Dell is 5½ years old, so I'm sure my Dell Product Recovery CD would not give any info. that would be useful to Jan. I can read all the text files included on the CD, if I press the Shift Key when I insert the CD in the Drive. At least Jan might do that and pass on the information. On my Recovery CD there is a text file with complete instructions for the recovery of Windows 98SE.

    FWIW

petec sorry so late had granddaughter over,

ran sfc/scannow, windows files protection came up and when it finished it said that "files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the dll cache" insert your windows xp professional cd2 now.

had a problem cancelling kept telling me that i would need the cd later on and was i sure (yes) soooooooo! now what?

if i understand it right we didnt get close to checking the files and cd2? thats what it said. going back to dell and see just what i am supposed to use in place of windows xp professional cd2.

You're most welcome! Windows XP Media Center 2002 is your OS, but what I was wondering about was the Model of your Dell. E.G., XPS200, 400, 600, Dell Inspiron, Dimension E310, etc. The reason I'm asking, is because the newer models have a simplified way to restore to factory installation, which, as I understand it, requires no additional software (Recovery DVD). See the bolded "NOTE" below:

From one of the Dell KB Articles, instruction for restoring the system to the Dell Factory installation:
From what I can gather there is no CD2, which if not OEM System Recovery software, would contain the Media Center Edition 2002, plus Media Player. Dell furnishes only the one DVD which contains everything.

If you have an older system Dell PC Restore by Symantec is available on Dimension and Inspiron systems that shipped on or after 7/16/2004 in the Americas, and 8/30/2004 in Europe. The instructions are in this Dell KB Article. This also appears to require no additional software (Recovery DVD).

I'm not clear as to what exactly you did with sfc - it sounds like you skipped the file checking :)

Sfc can be a pain and is very picky as to which disk is used - it should be the original installation disk. I have no recent experience of OEM computers and their disks having built my own computers for many years.

However a typical sfc scenario is like this ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > OK noting the space after sfc. When sfc asks for the disk put it in the drive - and leave it there. Each time the message re. inserting the CD comes up hit 'Retry'. It gets monotonous, but so long as the blue bar progresses across the dialogue box sfc is functioning. It will take 20/30 minutes to complete. To be sure that the process is running check the hard drive light - this should be flicking almost constantly and the CD-ROM drive light should flicker occasionally too.

Using the System File Checker Tool

ramona it is a dimension e510 and maybe that cd2 is referring to sp2 or rollup2 who knows

petec i did sfc /scannow from run and the windows file protection came up and ran for about 20 or so minutes, gave me the message and told me to insert the xp pro cd2 didnt get past that.

dell says that the reinstallation dvd is the one to use,and want me to repair windows by pressing r. also gave me link to site that im follow which brings up another question the site mentions restore. is restore the same as repair? computers can be nit-pickers.

ramona you have a new dell? what do you have listed in dell accessories? and oh yeah my computer was shipped 10/09/05, missed it by 9 days.

Restore vs Repair - are they the same - that is the $64,000 question :) The terms are sometimes used very loosely and actually mean completely different things!

Restore as in System Restore - restores the System to a previous state of a few days/weeks ago from within Windows. No data is lost - the computer is restored to the state it was in on the chosen date.

Restore as in using a Restore disk - restores the computer to the state as shipped - drive formatted, all data wiped plus any software added.

Repair - repairs the current Windows installation - effectively reinstalls Windows over itself, correcting errors. Nothing should be lost, but you may need to reinstall specific drivers such as video.

Suggest you boot from the reinstallation disk and follow the on screen prompts - ignoring the first R - Repair option using the Recovery console and proceed as outlined here ....

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
At any time until you fully commit at stage 5 you can hit F3 to quit without any changes being made and come back for more guidance, etc.

:) this is an added bonus, been meaning to mention it but having senior moments
i use on line library services (pines) order books etc but lately the site is not loading completely(it doesnt load what i need, the whole top of the page is empty) checked it out with firefox and also my 98se they load complete, so it is this computers ie6 problem.

another thing(bonus?) i play mahjong on yahoo i get flashes(as if with camera flash) and i can read what is on my toolbars when i click on a tile, but that page is the only up,whats under is desktop everything else is closed.

is this part of the problem or a clue to what is wrong with adell. oh yeah the firefox i used to check library site is on her (like i said it worked)

only send in 2 error reports lately one was add/remove froze and i could close control panel and open start but couldnt close add/remove. nonrespondenseing program. the other one installation wizard for dell service manual,it froze but i could open start and close it down i dont know just trying to give clues. or maybe trying to avoid reinstalling.?:)
