Thanks for the heads up on this :) I wonder how it will compare with the new version of CounterSpy, due out soon.

So if we have Microsoft AntiSpyware do we uninstall it and download Windows Defender? Using the 'Look for Updates' in AntiSpyware tells us that none is available, hence my question. Thank you.

Stu, a techie at Sunbelt, told me to hold on to my hat... the new, much leaner, quicker CounterSpy due out any day now will blow the competition out of the water. So... we shall see!

Indeed :) Particularly interested as I use CounterSpy on the desktop and WD on the laptop.

    Hi Pete,
as I understand it, you have installed Windows Defender. How did the uninstall of Microsoft Anti Spyware go? Did it leave debris or was it nice and clean?

    Thanks,
    Christer

    Hi Christer

I really don't know how clean the uninstall was - simply loaded up Defender - immediately had the Updates Notification icon appear in the Notification Area and updated. Mind you, until I did a reboot the MAS icon remained in the Notification area.

Next time I boot the laptop I'll try and remember to check out the Registry, etc.

Interesting point - WD now detects my BT broadband dialler (says it's critical - remove - oh yea :D) whereas MSAS did not, as I recall - unless that is I put on the ignore list some time ago.

According to James' post the upcoming new version of Counterspy - also based on Giant - will knock the pants off WD. As I use CS on the desktop I look forward to the new version - I have an issue or two with the current version.

I was thinking of left over files and folders too. I will probably create a Ghost Image and go WD myself, possibly later today after the upcoming Windows updates.

I summarize what I read on a swedish XP site:

Due to a bug, Windows Defender does not install correctly on non-english versions of Windows.

To get it right on XP pro, a new user named <administrator> and a new group named <users> must be added prior to installing WD.

To get it right on XP home, these steps must be taken:

    1) Start > Run > type in: net localgroup Users /add > OK
    2) Install Windows Defender
    3) Start > Run > type in: net localgroup Users /delete > OK

I have searched the web for confirmation but this far no luck. Anyone on here who can confirm?

I have installed the new Defender. I used JV16 and CCleaner to check for leftovers. There were many from Microsoft Antispyware, to include the Registry. Using the two programs listed, cleaned them and now can find no trace of the older program.

The lack of an icon in the Notification area aka Microsoft AntiSpyware had me worried until I spotted this in the Release Notes ....
I would rather see the icon aka CounterSpy so that at least one knows that protection is enabled.

I'm not sure what's up with that. One thing I think is that like Windows Vista, Windows Defender will be integrated in the Security Center (XP SP3?).

Now in Windows Vista, Windows Defender still uses a tray-icon too

Is this the experience of others running Defender? Does anyone see an icon permanently in the Notification Area (System Tray)?

Check: Error message when you try to install Windows Defender Beta 2: "Error 1609. An error occurred while applying security settings. User is not a valid user or group. "

This is because you're installing an English version on a non-English OS.

Nobody should see an icon, as Windows Defender doesn't 'provide' one. Only when there's something to show (like an error updating definitions)

Yes, Arie but it is the only version and it is said to be OK for all operating systems!

I will wait until offered an upgrade through the MSAS updater.

I assume you mean "for all languages ".

It's still beta, and localized versions will be made available later.

I posted this under a Defender boot issue in error -

I also installed Windows Defender Beta 2 and it really does seem to be a lesser being than its predecessor.

1 - I have no idea if it is actually running or not (I don't think it is since it did not run an automatic scan this morning)

2 - History file is empty despite having run it a number of times manually

3 - There is no way that I can see to turn protection on

    Overall 0/10.

Question - How do I tell Microsoft their new baby is a bit sick ?

    Addendum to my previous post

I uninstalled Defender and re-installed it and it would appear to be a little better in that Protected items are now visible.

However, I now have a system tray icon which stayed after a reboot. It does appear to have an exclamation mark on the icon and when I open it, it says that the definitions have not been updated for 26 days. On trying to update it, I am told that the definitions are up to date !

On the reboot of the system, Registry Mechanic 5.1 noted 104 errors directly attributable to Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Has anyone out there got any ideas as to what is going on with this product - I know it's a beta version BUT .........

    I am using XP Professional.
