I'll be slowly scrolling down a web page --- any web page -- and suddenly it scrolls all by itself all the way to the bottom. I try to scroll back up, and it just bounces back to the bottom. Has anyone else had this problem? It's happening to me more and more often lately.
Windows XP and Firefox. Avast is my anti-virus program, and it hasn't found anything. Neither has Norton, which I installed briefly just to check this.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, I have had the problem. It has been absolutely random and seems to stop doing it just as randomly.

    Thank you

How frustrating. Do you think it's Firefox? I don't think it ever happened to me before I started using Firefox. Well, anyway, thanx for responding.

    Alice,

In Tools | Advanced settings, under Browsing, do you have Smooth Scrolling enabled? If so then change that setting to AutoScrolling and see if that helps.

Are you using Firefox 1.5.0.1? I had a similar problem when scrolling Bookmarks, but that was in an older version.

Ramona, I just checked, and browsing is set to AutoScrolling --- and yes, I'm using 1.5.0.1. Thanx for responding, though.

    Alice,

I did a Bug search and came up with 200, but I didn't see anything specific to what is happening with you and Bmoore. You might want to check the Firefox Bugs and see if others are experiencing this same annoying problem.

    Alice,

If you are using a laptop, I'm seeing several people reporting problems using a synaptic touch pad. Updating to the latest drivers have reportedly resolved their scrolling problem. Those drivers are available at this site: http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm

Please ignore if this isn't applicable to your situation.

I have had the problem with one or two themes, not the default theme.

I am using the default theme on FF 1.5.0.1 and a home made AMD pc and microsoft keyboard. My scrolling was set to autoscrolling UNchecked and smooth scrolling checked. Now I have changed it to auto checked and smooth unchecked.

This happens so seldom that it is very hard to pin down. Kinda like the weather in East Texas..just wait a minute, it will change.;) ;)

    Thanx

Thanx, BMoore. I'll try it that way for a while and see what happens.

I'm an IE user so I can't really help too much when it comes to a Firefox related problem. That said, have either of you given any thought to the possibility of it being a mouse related problem? I have a MS optical mouse and every once in while it'll scroll by itself. Not a whole page though like yours is though. Mine (I think) is due to the wheel being not quite centered on one of the stops if that makes any sense to you. I think it sort of roles over to the next one itself. This only makes things scroll the amount of lines that I have it set to scroll in the mouse software in the control panel though.

How do you scroll? Are you using a mouse wheel or clicking on the scroll bar? If you're using the mouse wheel to scroll when this happens, check your mouse software to see if you can omit certain programs from wheel scrolling using the mouses software. I do have Firefox and I tried omitting it in the Intellipoint software and the wheel still works fine in Firefox. It would appear Firefox has it's own support for the wheel. Perhaps the mouse software conflicts with Firefox's support for it. To do this with an MS mouse, open the mouse applet in the control panel, click the wheel tab and then where it says "wheel troubleshooter" , click the advanced button. MS is the only kind of mouse I have so I can't help with the others but my guess is they may have something similar.

If you use the scroll bar and have this problem, I don't really know. If it's the mouse causing it, about the only thing I can think of that would cause it would be a sticky mouse button. The only thing I can suggest for that is to try a different mouse and see if it still does it.

    Thank you, Zander

Zander, thanx for your input. I haven't had the scrolling problem in a few days now, but I'll keep your note, just in case.

Something, pretty amusing, happened when I decided to see how my MS autoscroll mouse would work in the Manage Bookmarks. Oops, don't click on the scroll button! I got 32 bookmarks opening as Tabs! And, the memory usage more than double to 120MB (I am using FF1.5.0.1). I did not even remember I had some of those bookmarks.
