    User Profile

    Ramona,

    I had the same issue yesterday. I created a 2nd profile and now I can't find my first one, which had a ton of bookmarks. I am using 1.0.7...I was going to upgrade last night but was concerned my old bookmarks would then be gone forever.

    Did the 2nd profile write over the first? I've searched through my files and just cant find the original default account data and the bookmarks.

    Thanks for your help!

    Summerdale's Daughter:)

    I found the folder with the defaults and deleted the 2nd profile. But the system keeps telling me that Firefox is running but not responding and to either kill the process or restart. I've restarted twice. Upgraded to the latest version of Firefox and checked my "processes" to kill the app. Its not there. I've saved a copy of my bookmark file and will uninstall Firefox and reload...I think that should solve my issue. No need to reply unless you hear from me again.

    Sorry to have bothered you!

    That didn't work either...so I would love some help! I uninstalled Firefox, restarted the computer, reinstalled FireFox and its still telling me that Firefox is running but not responding and to either kill the process or restart.

    How can this be?

    Thanks
    Lynn

    I would have not expected that you accomplish anything.

    The profile is the problem. That's what is running the show.
    I do not get a clear picture here. May be you answered the question, and may be not. You say that you have Firefox1.0.7, but what operating system? Is your User Agent String more like this than Ramona's? Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7
    Ramona uses Win98, while I use WinXP. since you indicate that you can't find the files, you are, very likely, using WinXP, and those files are hidden. Ramona's Netscape solutions should give you a hint . Only the profiles for Firefox would be in C:\Documents and Settings\Fulvio Perini\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles, and you should find two of them. One with the .default and the new one. The above link should tell you how to by-pass the profile manager, and get the needed files into the new profile. I assure you that there was no overwriting.

    I am using XP, I found the folder with the 2 profiles in them. Thanks for your reply. For now, I switched to Netscape as I work from home and need my browser. I will do the research you suggested and figure it out.

    Thank you for your time :)

    Welcome to the Forum, grapemini!

    Lynn,

    No need to figure it out on your own if you're having problems. That's what we're here for, and would love to be of help. Nice to know that you are Summerdale's daughter, and glad to have you aboard.

    I have created this new thread in order to separate it from the older one, from which you quoted.

    When you reinstall Firefox, install the latest version which is 1.5.0.1. As Westside advised, the problem is in the Profile, and uninstall and reinstall of the Program has no effect on the Profile.

    Let's troubleshoot and see if any of the steps help

    It appears that Firefox can't find the original Profile, and that's why you have the second, empty Profile. You can edit the profiles.ini file to point Firefox to the correct Profile:

    Your profiles.ini file is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

    Open the file in Notepad or Wordpad
    It will be similar to this:

    Code:
    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile=1

    [Profile0]
    Name=default
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/xyz321vb.default
    Default=1

    [Profile1]
    Name=default
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/h8jt925r.default
    Default=1
    If you have two Profiles named default Firefox has no idea which Profile to use. You will need to edit this file in order to find out which Profile has your data.

    First: make a copy of the file and place it somewhere else on your HDD.
    Next: remove the second entry in the file
    Save the file
    Try to start Firefox
    Does it start, and is it your original Profile?

    If not, follow the same procedure, this time removing the FIRST entry, and replace the SECOND entry. You will need to edit the first line of the SECOND entry:
    Change the first line

    FROM: [Profile1]
    TO: [Profile0]

    Save the file
    Start Firefox
    Did this open Firefox with your original Profile?

    Let us know if you are successful.

    Firefox running but not responding

    I also have the same Firefox fault message (it comes after an hour or two of use). I tried lthe suggested remedy, but there is only one profile shown in the 'profiles.ini' file---not the second one which could cause confusion to Firefox. Any more suggestions?

    Now, what about the hard drive? Is there only one profile found, there?
    I have had my share of problems with FF1.0.7, but I also have 1.0.8 nightly and 1.5.0.1, on my computer. Generally, I can work with any of the three programs, by by-passing the Profile Manager , or by selecting the correct profile. None of my profiles has the name "default" attached to the profile number.name, but each one has a different number.name. I can go, smoothly, from one program to the other, after closing the original one, but I have had difficulties with 1.0.7, and only after 1.5.0.1 has been installed. My webpages did not fully load. In fact, 1.0.7 did not fully load. But, everything has been cool, when I created a new profile. So far, I am going to stay away from 1.5.0.1 for one full week (five days of no problem, so far). My profile.ini seems correct:

    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile=0

    [Profile0]
    Name=Firefox1.5
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/8gq5syih.Firefox1.5

    [Profile1]
    Name=Nightly
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/o6vauio6.Nightly

    [Profile2]
    Name=Firefox1.0.7
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/52merspg.Firefox1.0.7
    Default=1

    Only Firefox1.0.7 is Default, as desired. The order is that that I created the profiles. Should my profile2 be Profile0?
