i have waited a almost 2 days to let chkdsk finish running but it does not want to go on to the next step...
this is a trimmed down ver of what i have so far after running "chkdsk /f /v /x /r "

File record segment 51788 is unreadable.
File record segment 51789 is unreadable.
File record segment 51790 is unreadable.
    File verification completed.

it is stopped here with a flashing cursor.
i dont think its locked up.
it should go on to the next step....

the problem is on a 160GB WD hd running off a promise ide controller card.
the drive was 85% full but now i cant see any files. xp still reports the drive space as being used.
i also tried to use mini pe to save the files. but all the tools in mini pe seem to hang on this drive also.

    maybe the HD is toasted?

Sounds like its hanging on bad sectors and indeed ready to die at best. Try a program called Active Undelete to restore files that have become "invisible ". As a tech i have tried many restore programs for lost data, and this one impresses me and doesnt cost an arm and leg either. Gets data back from formatted, removed and damaged partitions.

Try running Lifeguard tools (or similar) from the WD web site.
