 I am told by Windows Update that I need to install the new version of .net Framework but it will not install until the BETA verison is un-installed. When I try to do this I am told that it is not possible to un-install and directs me to a KB article that does not help?
Anyone out there with the knowledge please to enable this uninstall of the BETA version to succeed?

You should be able to uninstall it using add>remove programs. In add>remove, make sure the box at the top that says show updates is checked. Or have you already tried this?

The following quote comes from this page.
If you've already tried add>remove, you could try reinstalling the beta and then see if it'll uninstall properly.

    Hi Zander -

Sorry but I wasn't too clear what I had done - I have tried several times to uninstall through add<Remove. Here is what happened:

    1. "Uninstalling might cause other programs to stop working properly" - Clicked YES to proceed.

    2. Uninstall cannot continue because it might affect other applications that are installed. For more information see http://support.microsoft.com/support/KB/articles/q312/5/00.asp.

    3. Clicking OK to his error message brings about a "Please tell Microsoft about this problem" message!

Part of the data in this error message is related to "Visual Studio8setup" which I do not have installed!?

Navigating to the above URL and I am told that "The Knowledge Article (KB) you requested is currently not available" and goes on to suggest one of several options to search.

Searching the knowledge base reveals nothing, as does all the other options for uninstalling this beta 2 version???

    Can't re-install BETA2 because it isn't available now.

The only answer may well be to re-install the OS??
    I need a larger drive anyway!

Try the URL in your previous post again. It seems to be working now. This is from the page.

    Uninstalling .net Framework 2 BETA

:) Uninstall safely done - thanks! strange though because I don't know how I got WIN FX on my machine unless it is part of the BETA 2 version of .net ??

When I uninstalled WINFX it also uninstalled the .net Framework 2 BETA

Glad to hear you've got it taken care of.

As to what WinFX is, the nearest I can tell is it's some kind of programming interface that will be present in Windows Vista. It did come along with the .net beta install though.

It would be nice if they'd give you a message telling you that you have to uninstall it first before you can uninstall .net. Not very good thinking on their part. Wonder how many phone calls they got on that one? :D WinFX
