OK I have my little home network working great. But to get here I disabled windows and norton firewalls and have printer and file sharing on.

The ethernet hard-wired system consists of two computers running xp home edition (one is dual boot with win 98), dsl modem to Dlink 604 router, one networked printer, and one shared printer on the dual boot machine. I have opened the ftp ports for Serv U server and have opened one other port for a peer to peer application.

Now I'd like to make the network as secure as possible without restricting functionality. I believe the router has firewall abilities, but I'm not sure how much security it offers. Could someone knowledgable please give me some guidance on security measures I need to employ? Thanks.

This is what I would suggest.

Get a good antivirus a NAT adn a good SPAM software such as the microsoft one. THis is all you require. Most people would disagree but for home use this is more than adequate.

A hardware router firewall gives you very good protection & you should enable it. You require a anti virus, spyware program to be installed on each computer. If you are setting a home network, you can try AVG Free Edition(www.grisoft.com) and MS Anti Spyware. Plus download & install Adaware and update and check on frequent basis. Keep your OS current.

    You are not secure.

If you are running an ftp server (Serv U), you should configure it to use other ports than the default 20 & 21. Then use the router Port Forwarding to forward ftp requests to the ports you choose, such as some unassigned port numbers or something like 3020 & 3021, and let your trusted ftp users know these port numbers so they can cofig their ftp clients to use them when connecting to your ftp server.

Having a home ftp server using the default ftp ports will allow hackers to at least identify the fact that there is an ftp server running, afterwhich they could take measures to try to exploit it. Hackers generally scan for known services such as ftp, using the default ports 20 & 21.
