I have an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ and know that AMD's chips run hotter than Intels. However my case fan has always been permanently on. Is this normal? The heatsink fan only comes on periodically and is quite quiet but the case fan is very noisy and I would like to try to controll it somehow. Is this possible? I very rarely do gaming, the most hard work the PC does is probably DVD burning.

    Hi Woz,

Very unusual that your CPU fan only comes on periodically, normally they run all the time. Do you know what temperature your CPU is running at?
Case fans do normally run all the time, some at variable speeds, some at their maximum all the time. The best cure for a very noisy fan is either a speed controlled fan, or a new, quiet fan. I would suggest you look at a new fan, and read reviews of it regarding the noise it generates.

I see you have an Asus K8v Deluxe mobo - check in the BIOS and see if Q fan is setup.

Check out your CPU temp with Everest - Computer > Sensor

Temps look good - will probably be lower with the case side on.

My Athlon 64 3500+ with Cool'nQuiet generally runs at under 30 deg C unless pushed to run at max speed when the temperature rises somewhat.

Did you check Q fan in BIOS?

    Q Fan

There is nothing in there resembling "Q Fan" the nearest is something called AMD Cool and Quiet which is enabled.

    Don't worry about Q-Fan - some Asus mobo's have it, others don't.

AMD Cool'nQuiet 'dynamically and automatically changes the CPU speed, voltage and amount of power depending on the task the CPU performs'.

 Current AMD chips are cooler than Intel's.

if you are bothered about the racket that the case fan makes, just change the case fan. I can recommend CoolerMaster fans whole heartedly.
