I have used Norton anti virus successfully for 10 years but have reached the point where I want to change. I simply have a home desktop and a laptop, both with XP as well as wireless and DSL. The only ones I have heard of are Mcafee and a free one AVG. What do you suggest? Is there any problem removing norton and installing another program?

The following all did well on Virus Bulletin's June 2005 Windows XP comparative:

    Kaspersky KAV Personal

    Avira/H+BEDV AntiVir

    GDATA AntiVirusKit

    MicroWorld eScan Internet Security

    NWI Virus Chaser

Not rated as good as any of the above but, it they are free (and better than Grisoft's AVG):
    Alwil's avast! Home Edition

    AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

I "ve found AVG free to work just fine. I've been using it for years. I notice it wasn't even on the test list.

I back the AVG with an ocassional free online scan by TrendMicro and eTrust. They seem to find things that the others miss.

I'm not an expert at these things. First, I understand that good malware writers can fool any installed anti vius program. Thus, a need for an online scan.

But mostly, each program may define malware differently. I've experienced RAV, Panda, and Kapersky identifying each other as malware.

I do some stick my head in the fire stuff and my computer runs just fine. What more can I say? The proof is in the pudding.
