Well, not exactly. What I can see in the monitor has been moved to the right, about one inch, which leaves a black strip about one inch wide all the way up and down the left side of the monitor. I really have no idea how this happened, and trying to adjust space covered by the wallpaper didn't help. I could see nothing in the desktop properties that would help out here. I tried doing a screenshot for everyone, but Alt-Print Screen only took the picture of the part I can see, and not the black strip at all.

Any suggestions? I recently did a repair installation of XP at the insistence of Dell's tech support. I know I know.... at any rate, I did this a couple of weeks ago and this monitor problem has only surfaced the last couple of days.

Have you used Control Panel-display settings

Did you try going to the Control Panel /Display and choosing a setting to suit the screen you have - for instance I am running mine at a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. What you run would be dependant on your graphics card and screen abilities. Mine can go no higher than that setting.

If you did try this did it have any effect at all.

Humbug, the monitor/screen resolutions haven't been changed.

Skeet, just as I was thinking "where are those darned 'adjustment mechanims' "? my eyes drifted to those buttons below the monitor screen Sure enough, we clicked on Size, and then on the right/left buttons that allowed us to change this.

My wife and I are blaming this one on our 18-month-old daughter, primarily for two reasons: 1. She often pushes buttons on the keyboard and monitor; 2. She can't defend herself. :D

    Thanks to you both.

You may need to get used to that with kids.

I had a similar problem with one of my computers. During bootups and the like -- whenever it was operating in VGA mode -- the screen was shifted a half inch to the left. So I could not see the first word or two in the command lines.

Like you, I couldn't figure out how to solve it. Then one day I thought of the monitor buttons, pressed one of them, and that solved it.

Or so I thought. Turns out I had the same problem a couple of days later, only worse. Now it was shifted over an inch. But this time it was easy to fix.

My 14-year-old son had been using the computer, which made me suspicious. I asked him if he had been pressing the monitor buttons. He said yes. I asked him why. He said that he wondered what would happen when he did. That particular button didn't seem to do anything, so he kept pushing it.

So it's not just the 18-month-olds. I don't know when they grow out of it. Funny, I don't remember doing things like that when I was a kid.

Oh these kids ! You can't be too sure what they are up to.

You are fortunate that they are just toying around with the monitor - my young ones (aged 12 & 6 now), about 2 years back, decided that my computer was too slow (I was using PIII 450 then) & decided to do something about that. To cut a long story short, they somehow managed to install Smoothwall firewall over it causing me a lot of headache.
