    A small problem but one I don't think should happen; doesn't on another machine I have.

    I recently rebuilt a [WinXP Home] machine. Now whenever I create a new user & log on I get the file "desktop.ini" in the startup folder. i.e. it opens up on the desktop every login. It is annoying having it appear as you then have to close notepad. The contents are

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

    It is not a shortcut to anything, but an actual file. This file does not exist in the "Default User" which is where XP copies the initial files for a new user. It is easy enough to delete it (a one time action) to prevent it happening in future logins, just seems odd it happens in the first place.

    Anyone know what causes it to be created and how I can prevent it happening for every new user? I am about to rebuild another and wouldn't want it to happen on that one too.

    Thanks ZAnder. I've now deleted those files.

    Like you RSINFO I've now deleted them but would like to know how they got there. Guess we'll never really know why.

    Intriguing those files showed in new users but not in "All Users" (until I unhid ops sys files). That was why I got confused; didn't think to flick those switches to check.
