I'm pretty green so please be concise. I don't understand a lot of jargon. Anyway, I've been using Zone Alarm's free firewall for the past few years with satisfaction on Windows XP home PC. Recently I discovered that my subscription fee to Comcast includes McAfee Firewall Pro, Anti Virus, and Privacy Protection so I figured I might as well use it, since I hadn't been using an anti-virus at all. (Yeah, I know, I've been really lucky so far.) After I downloaded McAfee I noticed my start-up time increased significantly so I figured the amount of start-up programs needed culling. I've tried to uninstall ZA using their uninstall wizard but I keep getting the message that it cannot complete the uninstall because it can't close out of the True Vector internet monitor engine because I have other programs using it simultaneously. I supect McAfee is but how do I shut it down? I've tried to disable and exit the programs via right clicking but there must be more to it or something I'm overlooking 'cause its not working. I've also checked and disabled the Windows XP OS firewall. What am I missing? I tried to contact ZA and McAfee via their i-net help centers but they're automated and don't give me any help. Thanks.

never mind, I figured it out on my own...I'm slow, so what

When the ZA uninstall wizard starts it asks if you're uninstalling OR upgrading to select 'yes' otherwise select 'no'. I was mis-reading it as 'if you're uninstalling TO upgrade... so I kept selecting no. When re-read the directive for the umpteenth time I finally understood what it was saying and selected yes (after I had previously closed and disabled all McAfee products) the wierdest thing happened...the True Vector engine was shut down and the ZA was uninstalled! Helps to read and follow directions even when you're fifty. Now if I could figure out a way to not have my lexmark load at start-up and net meeting and msn messenger....:D

mclarrie - Welcome to the Board :) - Glad to hear you figured it out.
Start > Run > type in msconfig > OK. Hit the Startup tab and uncheck those items you do not want to start on boot. Take care and only disable an item if you are sure that you know what it is :) Can always re-enable.

Thanks PeteC. I knew it was something I'd done before but not often enough to remember how. That's how this stuff is with me. I can turn a wrench and fix microscopes and balances that weigh knats eyelashes but I still can't type more than twenty words a minute. Oh well, after having my heart and lungs and a kidney replaced I'm more than grateful to be able to still be doing that much!

You're welcome :) Sounds like you've had a rough time - best to you!

If it's any consolation I've been dabbling with/using computers for 15 years or more - and still type with one finger :D
