    Win XP, Home, SP2.

I just got a new monitor (Dell 24 inch) with the media card readers built in.
My PC also has the media card readers built in.

Problem: To many card readers! I would like to get rid of the ones in the PC
since it sets on the floor and is hard to reach. I want to keep the ones on the
    monitor active.

Each individual shows up as a Disk Drive in the Device Manager all are USB
    devices under the Disk Drives.

The ones from the monitor show in device manager as:
"Generic USB CF Reader USB Device "
"Generic USB MS Reader USB Device "
"Generic USB SD Reader USB Device "
"Generic USB SM Reader USB Device "

The ones from the PC show in device manager as:
    "SMSC 223 U HS-CF SB Device "
    "SMSC 223 U HS-CF MS Device "
    "SMSC 223 U HS-CF SD\MMC Device "
    "SMSC 223 U HS-CF SM Device "

Could this be as simple as disabling the unwanted devices within device
    manager?

    Thanks,
    savagcl

Strange, i had to disable the monitor ones (Generic ones). Disabling these
SMSC 223 U HS-CF, didnt work. Disabling the generic one caused the system to
"switch ", so now the monitor ones are labeled as SMSC------- and are turned
    on at the monitor.

Ah well, the workings are wonderful and mysterious, but working anyway!!!!

    thanks,

Hello, I am experiencing the same problem as described above. My Dell9100 media card reader doesn't want to work. I am wondering if it is because my Dell 2405FPW monitor also has media card reader capabilities which are conflicting. When I look in device manager I can see all 4 disk drives showing up as USB ports, just as savagcl explained. But I do not see the card reader drives displayed from my monitor like savagcl saw. If I disable the drives from my p.c. I still don't see any from the monitor appear. I could use a little help if anyone has a chance.
    Thanks,
    Andy

    andyh,

Wish i could help but i dont understand how this works. Basically, for me, it
was just a trial and error.

I did however have to use a cable going from the monitor into a USB port on
the PC to get the card readers (on monitor) to show in the devices. Without
this cable, they dont show up at all.

    hope this helps.

It looks like I have a USB cable going from the monitor in the back by the video cable, to a USB port on the computer already, I'm not sure why it's there, is this what you're speaking of?

    andyh,

This is not the monitor to video card cable(i have that one also). The one i
have is a separate cable from monitor to USB port. My cable, on one end has
a smaller plug than a normal USB cable. Of course the other end has a normal
    USB plug.......

Essentially, 3 cables are needed for my monitor - 1 = power, 1 = monitor to
graphics card and finally, 1 for the monitor card readers to PC USB port.

    Is this what you have?

You still have the monitor user manual? The DELL site may have it online.
I had to read it 3 times before i figured out that another cable was needed.

    Hope this helps,
    savagcl

I also have 3 cables coming from my monitor just as you explained. It seems my monitor card readers are not displayed in the Device Manager for some reason.

Where were your monitor card reader drives displayed at in Device Manager?

I do have the monitor user manual on a disk but at first glance couldn't find any relavent info, maybe I should look again.

By the way, thanks for help!

    Andy,

Only 4 devices showed under the "Disk Drives" in device manager, even with the cable connected.
To make the CR's on the monitor active, i had to disable the 4 on the CPU
and reboot then the new ones showed up.

Result: 4 CR's (on cpu) show as disabled, 4 on monitor show as active.

I'm thinking maybe there is a limit on drives, even removable ones. So, if you
disable the 4 (on CPU) showing via the device manager and reboot, then your
system should have room for the monitor ones........

To disable or enable a device in device manager, right-click it and select
disable or enable. A warning msg will show, accept it. Your screen may blink
a couple times but thats ok.

No sweat, glad to help where i can,
    savagcl

    savagcl,

So I disabled the 4 CR drives that were displayed in Device Manager, rebooted and all I saw were 4 disabled drives, not 8 like I was hoping. I was kind of confused at this point.

It turns out the 4 USB CR disk drives displayed in Device Manager were from the monitor all along, not the p.c. like I thought. Checked the connection on the p.c. CR's drive to the motherboard, rebooted and all 8 drives were displayed! The problem was as simple as a loose connection. Although I still would have ran into problems getting them to work without stumbling on to this thread.

    Problem resolved, thanks savagcl!
