When I installed Photoshop 6, and opened it the first time, it informed me that the "scratch memory" and my windows pagefile memory were on the same volume and I would get more performance if I put them on different ones. It siad pref different drives, but since I only have 1 HD(1 cd then a floppy too) that wouldn't be possible. I would like to know how to create that volume. I've been doing some reading, (I know Uh O) about page file memory and extended etc. I would love to know how to put the page file on a different volume also, since that's suppossed to be optimal....So...can I get some good links? or is it explainable here? I have the whole c: drive on 1 volume, only 1 partition, or is that the same thing...? I upt my page file memory to 1000, I have 512mb of ram, did I do that ok? the max is 2000 now also. It was 700 something...I figured just another 250 or so wouldn't hurt, as you can see, I like to tweak a bit.....lol But don't want to mess up too bad, that's where you guys come in!! I just installed a 128mb GeForce 5200eVGA card and am really impressed with all this speed! LOL TIA
Dell 2400 w/new power src also, now a 450w. HTH

I don't think the performance difference will be all that great....But, you'd need to purchase a program like Partition Magic to create a second partition. A new second 40 gig drive would cost almost half of what Partition Magic costs...

Upgrade RAM to 1 GB & say bye bye to Photoshop messages - they were mostly coded in Win 95 era but have been unfortunately retained even now.

I'm at my limit....or I would believe me!

OK, Then a partition is pratically the same as a volume? Sorry, just want to be sure.

The straightforward way to avoid the Photoshop message re. Scratch disk is to use a fixed size pagefile....

Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change and set a fixed sized pagefile of 1.5 x RAM. You will need to reboot to get the settings to stick.

A fixed size pagefile does not fragment and will not get tangled up with PS's scratch disk.

Although I run my PS scratch disk on a dedicated partition on another drive I have set up PS on many computers with a single, unpartitioned drive and a fixed size pagefile. I doubt you will notice any difference in PS performance - for general usage between a scratch disk on a single drive or on a dedicated drive. IMO that holds for all versions of PS up to CS2.

Set the pagefile at 768 Mb min and 768 Mb max - that is a fixed size pagefile :)
