I want to install a new modem in my computer. Dell Dimension 4100 Conexant HCF v90 56k RTAD Speakerphone PCI modem. My question is will the v92 modem work in this computer or must I stick with v90? Thanks in advance, Frank

AFAIK v92 is backwards compatible with v90, but there is no guarantee that it will work at v92 in your computer.

V.92 - The Next Generation of Modem Technology
    What does it offer ...
Questions you need to ask your ISP.
Questions, services you need from your Telco (telephone company).

Sure sounds like a good direction to go as long as computer, ISP, and Telco fully support it.

Yep, it has more to do with "will my ISP support it" then it does your computer. Check with them. My guess is though, that like Pete said, it's backwards compatible.

Question - If ISP and Telco support all v.92 features, but computer does not, would an external v.92 modem resolve that issue? As an additional info tidbit to original poster "russarkie ", external modems seen to coexists / possible perform better than an internal modem ... but do cost more.

Thanks, everyone for your answers. I will check with my provider to make sure. Best to all, Frank
