Here's my problem. My daughter's Win98 computer recently crashed. The only thing I knew to do was format all partions, reload Windows 98, and all other needed software. All went well..until I tried to install McAfee virus software. It said IE 5.5 or above was required. The windows 98 disk contained IE 5.0. The computer has a dial-up modem. I don't think it's anyway practical to try to down a full version of IE 5.5 or above. I don't know of a way to download on my computer (cable modem), burn to CD, and install on the Win98 machine. All downloads I see give you an install file meant for the computer that you are downloading to. Any suggestion?

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll certainly try that. It's probably going to keep me busy for awhile, but I'll post back.

Apparently all went well. I can't test very well since I don't have dialup service, but the install seem to be okay.

    Thanks

As I said in prior post, all seems to be okay. Had no trouble downloading, burning to CD and installing on other computer. But that's as far as I can go now. I can launch IE 6.0, but can't browse since I don't have dial-up service, and my daughter's computer doesn't have a cable modem installed. I'll have to wait until I can take the computer to her house.

    thanks for inquiry

Well the first thing that I would do as soon as you get it on line is do ALL the Criticle Windows Updates. There are several Security Vunerabilities which patchs have been made for. 98 is fixing to no longer be supported and you will really be up the creek...

June 30, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.

There is a way to save them also. This is a little old but should still work...
