HI all, it's been a while! Hope everyone had a sound Christmas.

I recently contracted a couple of worm viruses after having to disable my Norton to update my media player settings. I remember that one of them was call W32.spybot.worm, and this was initiated by C:\windows\Shost.exe

Norton succesfully removed it, and I have scanned since and everything is fine.

But now, on initial connection to the internet, my home page (Google UK) doesn't load, I get one of those "The page can not be displayed" notices.

A quick click on my home icon and I'm in business.

Any ideas on how to stop this?

    Cheers.

Ok, I've now noticed that if I select a previously visited url from the address bar, it loads the page as it was when I went there first, it doesn't show the most recent page.

Does this mean anything to anyone?

    Hello Digitalis,

Don't have a specific fix for IE - your last post indicates that the page is not refreshing. If no one comes up with a specific fix, you may have to do a repair install of XP to get it fixed.

I'm curious about this after having to disable my Norton. What did you disable - the anti virus checking, or if this is NIS, the firewall, or if this is NAV2005, the internet worm protection?

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks for replying Charles.

I had to disable the NIS2004 firewall to update some lisencing thing on my media player (this was so I could "rent" a movie for a specific time).

Foolishly, I disbled my NIS anitvirus too ( ??? ).

Then the rest is in the post above.

    Dig

    Hi Digitalis,

If you have occasion to disable the firewall (a terrible idea, but ok), at least enable XP's and try whatever your doing with that on. I think that's the way you got the worm. That can be done either thru the Security Center (SP2) or in XP's Services page - Windows Firewall or pre SP2, the firewall is called ICF.

I'm not familiar with NIS, so can't tell you what happens, if shutting down the firewall also shuts down the AV - I doubt that it does though.

    Regards - Charles

Yeah, XP firewall could have been a good idea.

I found something else today, on log on to eBay, I was faced with a security warning (not yet valid or expired security certificate). Obviously, the first thing I did was check my windows clock, it was set ot 26/01/05

Don't know if this has anything to do with IE, and I haven't tested it yet, but interesting, eh?

Yep, the windows clock seemed to be the culprit.

Logged on twice now, straight to Google. Revisited URL's are the current ones.

    Job done!

A little too quick off the mark on my last post.

    It's still doing it.

Check to make sure that IE didn't somehow get set to never check for new versions of the page. In IE click tools>internet options. On the general tab where it says temporary internet files, click the settings button. You'll see a place there where can tell it how often to check for new pages. If it's set to never, change it to one of the others. I believe automatic is the default although I'm not sure how it decides to check when this is selected. I use the one that says every time you start Internet Explorer.

Also, before you do this you should check to see if your home page is still set to what you want it to be. You'll see that on the general tab also.
