One step forward, 2 steps back.

In trying to get the Help system to work again by doing a Repair from the CDROM, all the old problems have come back again, namely:
Right-clicking the desktop produces no response; trying to open most of the control panel apps has no effect; looking at Events causes a hang; shutdown is impossibly slow as the machine hangs on "Saving Your Settings ".

I really thought I had this beat, but it looks like it is balancing on a bit of a knife edge. Error 3006 and 3011 both came back at the last restart.

BTW I mis-quoted the C:\ partition size. It is about 7.5GB, with a 1.5GB pagefile and 1.5GB free space.

Round and round in circles more like :)

Have you rin the tests I suggested in post #16 for hard drive and memory?

My only other suggestion at this point is to copy all your data off the C:\ partition, boot from the CD and make a clean install with format.

    Pete,
    You are not wrong there.
Yeah, I ran chkdsk as part of the first batch of diagnostics, and I have memory test utility I've used before for stressing the RAM.
Both came up with nothing to report.

Services seem very very slow to respond, for example when shutting something off or switching to manual from automatic. Is that normal?

What I will do is strip out drivers for anything connected to USB and reinstall, see if that helps.

When I first saw some symptoms after WMP crashed, one of the very first things I had to do was install a driver for a USB 7-in-1 device, which previously had worked flawlessly with a default XP driver. It is this that the CAILI stuff is linked to. Don't know if I'm clutching at straws or not.

Oh, and after the "repair ", Help and Support is still not responding at all. :(

I think re-install is all I have left after this. D@mn.

Very slow is a bit subjective - instantaneously - not necessarily, a slight pause - yes.

Before you succumb to the clean install it would be worth running HijackThis - download through Quicklinks in my signature, save to a folder on your hard drive - not to the desktop or a temporary location, run it and post the log file here.

Very slow as in, change a setting, go away, make a coffee and read the paper.
This morning, errors 3006 and 3011 are still there, but they are the only two.

Here's the log from HijackThis. Only thing I don't recognise as mine is the reference to PCPitStop.

I see nothing amiss in your HJT log - you must at some time have logged onto PCPitstop and downloaded a benchmarker or something similar. If you do not use/want it scan again with HJT and fix ....

As a final (?) fling I think you should go back to msconfig and disable all items except the keyboard and mouse and restart and if no problems reinstate the start up items one at a time - you may find the culprit - or not :D

BTW do you have the latest version of Zone Alarm - I believe some earlier versions of Zone Alarm free were buggy. Would be worth uninstalling it and seeing if that makes any difference.

We may never know the culprit.

I tried booting with the minimum startup items and still had system hangs. Each time I tried a Repair from the XP CD, the system seemed more prone to hang-ups and the C:\ drive got full of **** temp files.
One re-install later and everything is fine (apart from the fact that some stuff on the D:\ partition was obliterated during the re-install).

Thanks again to all who posted suggestions.

Control Panel not working any more!

Sounds as though the .avi file had something in it that the registry didn't like?

The fault may be traceable by going to run and enter msconfig and then firstly disabling all the items under the sevices tab.

Reboot the machine and then re-enable the first entry, reboot and try to open the CP. If it works all well and good, if not, enable the next entry, and start again, one at a time until the fault is re-produced. This will take some time to achieve if you have many entries but it will be worthwhile.

You can also do the same with the start-up tab, if the machine fails at all during this procedure, you have found the culprit (a .dll file?) - the machine can be re-started in safe mode to get back at the msconfig window.

I haven't read any other posts so this may have already been suggested, sorry if I am out-of-date!
